    Robbie Fowler

Fowler searches in vain for fitting end
    By Tim Rich
    Last Updated: 3:54am BST 12/04/2007

He had not begun a match of any consequence for months and he is not likely to start another but when he came on Anfield rose to him. The man they once referred to simply as 'god' was in his kingdom, perhaps for the last time.

It was a dead game for everyone except Robbie Fowler. It has not yet been confirmed that he will be leaving Anfield at the end of the season but if he cannot command a starting place in a match which Liverpool are leading 3-0 with home advantage, it is time to draw your own conclusions.

Foreign managers have brought plenty to the English game, but they have not been overly sentimental figures. You think of Ruud Gullit's discarding of Alan Shearer, Arsene Wenger's refusal to play Ian Wright in the 1998 FA Cup final and Gerard Houllier's rotation policy that first forced Fowler from Merseyside six years ago.

However, as befits a Spaniard, Rafael Benitez's decision to bring Fowler back was a quixotic one that met with universal goodwill. However, hard as he trained and hard as he tried, the touch that gave him the surest instinct for goal of any centre-forward to have played for Liverpool since Ian Rush - he is still the last Liverpool striker to have scored 20 League goals in a season - had largely disappeared. The knee injury that cost him a place in the 1998 World Cup took a very heavy toll on Fowler.

To the Kop, however, the boy from Toxteth is still one of them although last night, if truth be told, Fowler did not do very much. He pulled back a loose ball to hand Peter Crouch the night's only goal and won a free-kick when scythed down by Carlos Salcido. But this had the feel of a testimonial evening, although Fowler was not a beneficiary. Yet, should he find himself on the bench in the European Cup final in Athens, there might still be time for one last twist, perhaps in a penalty shoot-out.

Like Shearer, Fowler does not have an awful lot to show for the adulation. He did appear on an open-topped bus parading the European Cup but that was in Madrid as a guest of his friend, Steve McManaman.

Fowler's second coming to Anfield produced no more than a respectable return. There were goals against Sheffield United and in minor Champions League games as well as the Carling Cup but the last major fixture he started was the disastrous Merseyside derby at Goodison Park that exposed all of Liverpool's traditional early-season failings under Benitez.

In the hard currency of medals, Fowler's pinnacle was the treble he won under Houllier. But like Shearer, his monument was his goals, mostly scored for entertaining but flawed teams constructed by Roy Evans, Liverpool's last link to Bill Shankly's bootroom - just as Robbie Fowler was the last link to the kind of footballer who on his way back from a match stopped off for chips and gravy and a can of Irn Bru with his mates.

I love the man but I have to admit that he's finished and it seems he knows that he won't be staying beyond the end of this season as he has no motivation and his body language looks bad.

He was the most talented goalscorer we ever had. Sad that bad injuries and lack of discipline cost him the chance of being the greatest, as he had the potential.

We could say that about so many of our players... Collymore was very talented as well, I thought he and Fowler could had been potentially the best forward line that could dominate the country in the mid 90s. Oh well, I'm getting side-tracked, this thread is all about God.

Is our last league match against Charlton at Anfield? If not, when's our last home league game? I wonder if we had secured the CL spot in the league by then, would Rafa, who ignored Smicer's plea, allow Fowler to bid his proper farewell to his faithful this time round? Seeing that he's the one who brought him back.

He should retire at the end of the season.

What a way to go out - after winning it six times.

That's a very good article, but the above paragraph negelects to mention the goals he got for us at the tail end of last season, which, IMO, has defined his "second coming"
I'm so chuffed that he managed to have another season and a half in the sun with us, but we all know his time is up.
Charlton on May 13th will probably be his last game as a Red at Anfield.

I'd love to see him go to the US where he can play regularly and enjoy a nice paycheque and some sunshine.

            GOD.

I would hope that Robbie would have some part to play in the club in the future once his playing career has ended.

Sure - but not necessarily straight away.
The guy has just turned 32, so he's still got a few years left in him, IMO.

This is why I would like to see him go to the US, rather than drop down a division. There'd be more dignity in a US move, as he'd be a leading light there, get the chance to play abroad in an English-speaking country, have a nice time and a nice payday.

Like he needs the money. But knowing him, he'd probably go over and buy up the entire state's real estates, and come back in 10 years time, 10 stones heavier, and buy Liverpool from G&H.

Course he doesn't need it, but that's not the point.
He could have a great life over there for a few years, or longer if he and his family like it..he could also make a lot of money over there with the amount of capital he's already accumulated, if that's his thing.

Just imagine it though. Robbie fowler coming on in the 119th minute in the final against the Mancs, putting away the winning penalty in the shootout. Unbearable in reality but the stuff dreams are made of!
