Don't think he has to be furthest forward, he's actually alright when he drops off a little, but he's definitely not suited to spending the bulk of his time between the lines.
If you are going to judge him on goals then abate until Rafa plays him up front. Given a deco (or some such) to play the number 10, he'll be back to a Feyernood(sp?) type scoring record.

I wasn't being sarcy mate, that's literally what I mean! He had a great period where he was playing up top and scoring a goal every other game despite not always starting. He hasn't got great flair or technique, but he's a smart player and the potential is there for him to be really effective for us.

Didn't mean to imply otherwise, just that there was a gap in the squad that Dirk was being asked to fill, that could be better filled by someone like Deco/Riqueleme. Don't think there is an English player that could do that. Do you?

Ah I see what you mean. Scholes is the only one I can think of that can create in a similar fashion to the players you mentioned. Few English players of that kind, and it tells in the national team.

Earlier this season I sort of tussled between the idea of us needing a forward who is more creative and plays deeper, and us needing an out and out striker whose main asset is sticking the ball in the back of the net, and I came to the conclusion that if we get some quality out wide and put Stevie back in the middle we'd have more than enough creative influence, without the need for a Deco type player.

What Rafa will do though I have no ****ing idea! I get the impression that Voronin may have been signed with the intention of playing him in a role similar to that which Kuyt has been playing for us of late. What that means for the kind of striker we'll be looking to sign on top of that is anyone's guess I suppose. Looking at who we've been linked with a poacher looks likely. Let's not forget we've still got Luis who can be class playing behind the front man.
