Finnan to Kop a new deal

STEVE FINNAN is the latest Liverpool player to be on the verge of an extended Anfield contract.

While all the focus remains on Anfield’s four big guns who are deep in negotiations, it’s emerged Finnan has joined the list of those Rafa Benitez wants to keep at the club.

It will be a just reward for the Irish international, who recovered from an uneasy start to his Liverpool career to become an unsung hero of the Champions League and FA Cup winning side.

The right-back has seen off the challenge of several new right sided defenders since joining from Fulham in 2003, and is now firmly established as the first choice full-back.

He turns 31 next week, but such has been his level of consistency and invaluable experience, Benitez was in no doubt the defender was worth an extension.

It’s a move which is sure to delight Finnan, who spoke only last week of his hope to extend his terms which have only a year left to run after this season.

American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks are also keen to reward at least four of Liverpool’s Academy youngsters with contracts following their success in this year’s FA Youth Cup.

The teenagers who’ve already made the step up to Melwood are in line for longer deals as Gillett and Hicks look to safeguard both senior stars and developing talent.

    NICE.

Finnan has been one of over most consistant players for the last few seasons.

Wonder if this means no Alves next season?

      Good work George and Tom.
Finnan is an immensely important member of our squad.

He deserves it without doubt has been up there with Carra as our best player of the last 3 or so years.

Pity he came to us so late in his career, he's my friends cousin.....no free gear though

I think redg means that another right back will be bought in the summer and Finnan will find himself displaced as first choice right back.

                If so, that's extremely presumptious.

Possibly. Though i'd not be too unhappy if Alves was our right back at the start of next season.

Well, he'd be wrong as I really can't think of any better all round right backs than Steve Finnan. He's superb and is one of our most important players. No one is displacing him next season.

I imagine that if we got Alves, he would rotate between RB and RM, much as say Riise does on the left, allowing Aurelio (or in this case Finnan) to come in at full back when he moves forward.

He'll still be a valuable member of the squad.

My point was that as age catches up on him i think he would be happy to not play as regular, seems the sort to finish his career with us.

I do rate him very highly although would like him to be a little bit more attackminded sometimes

Until Stevie Finnan starts showing signs of losing his excellent form of the last 3 seasons, talk of his demise are waaaayyy premature.
People seem to be using a calendar to judge the guy.

Even if Rafa bought a great RB,Finnan would still be a great squad player.
