I didn't either and just nearly fell off my chair at the thoughts of Pennant playing for Barca.

I know, lose Pennant? I shudder at the thought.

On reflection I'm not totally convinced.

He's done a good job of late and been one of our better players but that's in part due to other players massively underperforming. Xabi, Momo, Zenden, Gonzo, Kuyt and Bellamy have all been struggling, whilst Aurelio, Garcia and Kewell have been absent - some more than others. Even our captain has been subject to the accusation that he's phoning it in at times in recent games. By contrast Pennant has looked lively, like he knows he has a point to prove, but there still needs to be more end product and more goals too - 1 for the season just is not good enough.

His improvement has probably bought him another season at Anfield and it will be interested to see if he can continue it to the end of the season and into next year. I'd written him off at Christmas but it is pleasing to see him at least trying to prove me and other fans wrong, which is more than be said for certain members of the squad.

Why not? He can easily skin players like Asier Del Horne in La Liga. Watch him today against *the future England left-back.

                *according to Mark Lawro anyway

He had a great 1st half but faded. Overtaken for MOM by Kuyt, and maybe Arbeloa
