So, the moot point of this thread can now be put to bed. Rocket was wrong.

We beat Wigan tomorrow and we finish in the top 4 and are in next seasons European Cup. 100% FACT.

We win the European Cup and we go straight into the group stages. 100% FACT.

If that means Utd or Chelsea have to play a qualifier I will laugh. 100% FACT

I'm pretty sure that the winners of the competition are the top qualifier, bumping first place to second qualifier, and the two remaining teams then have to qualify for the group stages.
If we were to win the CL and finish 3rd in the league, both us and the top 2 from England would go directly into the group stage. There is an allocated space in the group stages for the winners of the previous years competition. There was no rule change in 2005 for this - the precident for this was set in whatever year (2000?) that madrid won the CL and finished 5th. Zaragoza went into the UEFA, Madrid got spains 4th place, but went directly to the groups as the number one seed and european champions. The other 2 spanish clubs from that season (Valencia and Barca?) also went directly into the groups. The only reason this did not happen to us in 2005 is because the FA refused to put us forward as Englands 4th team. If they had, we would have gone directly to the group stages.

                  WOO HOO!

                  Precedent :

AC Milan finished 3rd in their league in 2003 and all 3 teams went straight in!

I believe the rule was changed after but surprisingly there is no sign of this rule change.

Yeah, I was sure everything changed after 2005, so there is no precedent. I'm sure it will be clarified* by the media once we beat Chelsea.
