    Simao still in Rafa's thoughts

    Simao still in Reds' thoughts
By Alex Livie - Created on 23 Apr 2007

Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry has confirmed that Benfica star Simao Sabrosa is still in Rafa Benitez's thoughts.

The Portuguese winger has been a long-term target for Liverpool, with the Anfield giants having come close to landing Simao in the summer of 2005.

Benfica pulled the plug after he had passed a medical, but he has remained under the watchful gaze of Benitez for the last couple of seasons.

Simao has impressed once again this term and Benfica pulled off a notable coup in March as they persuaded the 27-year-old to sign a long-term deal.

Benfica confirmed last month that Simao's buy-out clause stands at €20,000,000 (£13.5million) and it would appear that this sum has not thrown Liverpool off the scent.

"Simao is certainly not forgotten," Parry told Portuguese daily O Jogo.

"We have not yet put any real thought into this, we have taken no decision, but we have not moved away from the hypothesis to come back and negotiate when the transfer window opens.

"Since our official bid for the player (August 2005), we have not had any more conversations with the club but, in the summer, we don't know if we will come back again."

I like him. I think he would be a very useful addition to the squad and ~£13m is decent value.

Wouldn't be surprised if we land him this summer - it's obvious Rafa really rates him and if he fits into Rafa's jigsaw who can complain.

One side effect should be the marked improvement of our set-piece play which has generally been woeful since Gary Mac left.

It would be good to see some not completely wasted wouldn't it.

I can't see what people have against him. He has consistently performed at the CL level especially against English teams. He scores goals and can play on either wing. Obviously he is over 12 which will put AFII off but I'm interested to hear why other people are so sceptical.

Ey? We've got some of the best dead ball strikers in the Premiership, Alonso, Gerrard, Riise, Aurelio, Gonzalez has shown he can do it as well occasionally, if not with us.

Personally I'm not that fussed about Simao, lightweight, predictable, 27 so should be at his peak now.

I'm not sceptical because he is over 12 Alves is over 12 and I want us to sign him

Simao have scored 10 league goals this season and two of them have been freekicks. Not that much when you consider that he takes more or less all the dangerous freekicks for Benfica.

Maybe he will be signed if Kewell leaves.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

no thanks, quaresma, alves, ribery all younger and better than simao. and all would cost similar prices.

So you're telling me you're happy with our Set piece play?

We should be far more dangerous from corners and free-kicks, yet we're predictable and often fail to beat the first man!

That doesn't sound like a Parry quote to me.

Dos he normally speak to foreign newspapers? I've not seen it before.
                  Oh I don't know.

Younger doesn't mean better. I would say Simao's biggest asset (apart from his freekicks) is his ability to cross well with both feets. He plays on the left flank for Benfica and the right for Portugal, and his work ethics seem to match Rafa's. Another player I would rate is Gamst Pedersen, can play both wings and effortlessly two-footed.

Versatility is an extremely important aspect in today's players.

Having said all that, I would be over the moon if we can sign Franck Ribery.

I think £13m is too much for him.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

not really when you look at some prices for other players. he is benficas captain and an international. plus he is a good player. but i dont think he's suited to the prem.

That was I was thinkink as well.
                              Or it could be smokescreen.
Rafa/Parry usually doesn`t speak about target. Who had even heard of Arbeloa before he signed.
