    AGGER'S NEW DEAL
EXCLUSIVE THE REMATCH: Milan kick off the war of words with Liverpool THE FINAL ATHENS, 23/05/07
    By David Anderson 04/05/2007

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE hero Daniel Agger is set to be rewarded with a new contract by Liverpool.

Boss Rafael Benitez is keen to tie Agger down to Anfield in light of the defender's impressive first full season, in which he has earned comparison with Reds legend Alan Hansen.

Agger, 22, has deposed stalwart Sami Hyypia as Jamie Carragher's regular centre-back partner and his goal against Chelsea helped take Liverpool through to their second Champions League Final in three years.

The Danish international has two-and-a-half years left on the £30,000-a-week contract he signed in January, 2006, when he joined Liverpool from Brondby for £5.8million. The Reds are prepared to give him a new four-year deal, which would include an annual £5,000-a-week pay rise.

Liverpool plan to begin talks after the Champions League Final and hope to shake hands with Agger before the players return for pre-season training in July.

Agger is thrilled by the prospect of playing against AC Milan in Athens and insists the Merseysiders can repeat their epic triumph of two years ago.

"This is by far the biggest thing I've ever been involved in in my career," he said. "I won't know how big it is until I run out on to the pitch in Athens for the first time. I'm really excited by this game and normally I am very calm and collected.

"Of course we can win the Champions League again. We have to believe that we can do it and if we didn't believe it, we would not have got past Barcelona and Chelsea and to the Final.

"It has just been such a great couple of days. After the game we went into town and got back rather late. We painted the town red and I just hope we are celebrating again in Athens."

Liverpool must find a way of stopping Kaka, the brilliant Brazilian who destroyed Manchester United in the semifinal, but Agger said: "We play against top-quality players every week, so I don't fear him."

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Agree - he's been ****ing great this season.

Can't believe he wasn't nominated for the PFA young player award. Or is he too old?

That really is starting to look like a steal, isn't it?
How much did that Rio chap down the road cost?

He isn't, he's the same age as Ronaldo.

Also, Kevin Doyle was nominated, and he's 23.

He's on 30k now. The article says a new deal (no amount, i'd guess around 40-50k mark) with a +£5k each year clause.

Agger is not worth the same wages as Gerrard! Firstly Agger has only done it for one season and he sells a lot less shirts, attracts less sponsors and puts less bums on seats. Gerrard is also the captain.

No one is saying he is. Just that if Gerrard is on £120,000, then Agger should be on more than £35,000.
