One could argue that the Champions League should be reserved for the league winners, though that is different to the author's view regarding the style of football. Certainly nobody in their right mind would suggest Chelsea won their two titles playing the sort of football that purists dream.

Mind you, Milan shouldn't even be anywhere near this season's competitions. I can't believe more hasn't been made of the fact that a side who apparently fixed their way into the tournament are now 1 match away from winning it.
What I find amusing is that nobody goes on about the fact that any 2nd/3rd/4th placed teams are allowed compete in the Champions League in August.

These gripes only occur as the "inferior" team becomes successful and progresses....even United fans were going on about a "Champions League only for Champions" after they lost to Milan -
When was the last time they won the League? How did they qualify for this year's competition?

I'd just like to witness the writer of that article approaching Kenny Dalglish and Graeme Souness and saying that this year's LFC team is an insult to the LFC team of the 70's and 80's.

"If Gerrard continues to play up front, leaving this lack of creativity and intelligence in Midfield, the season WILL be over by Xmas."

I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

Plus, when they won the CL in '99, they had entered the competition as runners up the previous season. Something they conveniently seem to forget and those who do remember, always seem to support the argument that only the top 2 should be allowed entry.

Silly ****. I have added a comment. It's below for those who cba to click on the link.

                                Alex Ferguson, 3rd Place Play-off, Wembley / 3:06pm 5 May 2007

What a nonsensical pointless vitriolic tirade from a floundering has-been of a journalist which champions very little except his own self-appointed mandate to be controversial & outspoken in his musings.

Of course, perceived flair teams such as Man United & Barcelona have been outstanding in this year's tournament haven't they? The much-vaunted Manchester United who left it to the last minute to crawl out of their group stages & with all the excitement of having surpassed last year's unceremonious disaster, then proceeded to mesmerise Europe with that display at the mighty Lille which required 2 of the most questionable refereeing decisions in recent history to elicit victory. Not to mention the positively shambolic displays away at Roma & at the San Siro to add to their over-flowing collection cupboard of wheezing defeats on the European road.

Reigning champions, Barcelona struggled similarly, although not quite as piteously given the presence of Chelsea in their group as opposed to the mediocrity in United’s, in the group stages & were overwhelmed by a much better organised team who, admittedly much weaker on paper, ruthlessly exposed the fragility & one-dimensionality of their opponent’s play.

Another “flair” team is Arsenal. Their trip to the final last year was an anomaly and they have consistently underperformed in Europe over the last decade under Wenger’s attacking vision.

So in summary let me contest to you: Liverpool have played like lions to reach the final of the European Cup. You, dear man, are not given the name Gibbons for nought.
                                3rd place. Worst champions ever.
