What teams did he want in the final?

The teams that tried to attack and couldn't defend (oh for example... the Manc scum), or the ones who won?

I'm sure Shankly and Paisley are looking down thinking, "How dare this man insult us with yet another European Cup?"

Surely it's up to us - Liverpool fans to decide whether Rafa's Liverpool is an insult to the Anfield greats, it certainly isn't up to a Utd fan (or whatever team he supports) to decide that. My guess is 99.99% of our fans don't think we're an insult to our past.

A team who after having spent £300m in the tansfer market in the last 3 and a half years have as their only tactic to send long and hopeful balls up to a big man up front to use his strength to outmuscle defenders? A team who despite having the advantage over every other club of being bankrolled by a billionaire still resort to diving, cheating and tying to get opponents booked and are the most ungracious losers who ever played the game? A team with no European pedigree, no history, not even really a very big club? Yeah, because that would be so much better for football than having Liverpool in the final

            Alex Ferguson, 3rd Place Play-off, Wembley / 3:06pm 5 May 2007

What a nonsensical pointless vitriolic tirade from a floundering has-been of a journalist which champions very little except his own self-appointed mandate to be controversial & outspoken in his musings.

Of course, perceived flair teams such as Man United & Barcelona have been outstanding in this year's tournament haven't they? The much-vaunted Manchester United who left it to the last minute to crawl out of their group stages & with all the excitement of having surpassed last year's unceremonious disaster, then proceeded to mesmerise Europe with that display at the mighty Lille which required 2 of the most questionable refereeing decisions in recent history to elicit victory. Not to mention the positively shambolic displays away at Roma & at the San Siro to add to their over-flowing collection cupboard of wheezing defeats on the European road.

Reigning champions, Barcelona struggled similarly, although not quite as piteously given the presence of Chelsea in their group as opposed to the mediocrity in United’s, in the group stages & were overwhelmed by a much better organised team who, admittedly much weaker on paper, ruthlessly exposed the fragility & one-dimensionality of their opponent’s play.

Another “flair” team is Arsenal. Their trip to the final last year was an anomaly and they have consistently underperformed in Europe over the last decade under Wenger’s attacking vision.

So in summary let me contest to you: Liverpool have played like lions to reach the final of the European Cup. You, dear man, are not given the name Gibbons for nought.

            Outstanding... ...

I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
              Mine angry and defrauded young?

What a poor article - complete tosspot who obviously has a shorter memory than a goldfish.
