LIVERPOOL CLOSING IN ON £20M TEVEZ

            Sunday May 20,2007
By John Richardson Have your say(0)
LIVERPOOL boss Rafa Benitez wants to splash a large part of his club’s Champions League cash on West Ham’s controversial striker Carlos Tevez.

Benitez believes he holds a powerful bargaining tool – as Tevez’s former Corinthians and West Ham team-mate Javier Mascherano is already at Anfield.

While the row over who actually owns Tevez rumbles on and could still affect the Premiership relegation situation, Benitez is quietly making his move for the brilliant Argentinian.

Real Madrid and Inter Milan have also been linked with Tevez but that hasn’t put Benitez off.

He has been promised substantial backing this summer from joint American owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks while his side’s amazing run to a second Champions League final in three seasons has helped fill club coffers.

Tevez could cost £20million and Liverpool will step up their discreet moves to land him after Wednesday night’s final in Athens against AC Milan.

They are ready to wrap up a £12m move for Mascherano and want to make it an Argentine double.

£20,000,000 seems a bit expensive for Tevez, no?

I wouldn't have thought so mate.

Didn't he win South American Player of the Year three times on the trot? For a good while, at least until Messi came along, he was considered *the* new Argie superstar.

He's a full Argentine international who, I think, starts most games for them. Since he's been played in his proper position for West Ham, combined with finding his feet in this league, he's shown his true level. I don't think that goalscoring run at the end of the season was anything freaky - this is what he's capable of all the time.

I'd ****ing love it if we signed him. When you add all that natural ability and flair to his incredible, infectious work-rate and enthusiasm, then he'd be absolutely guaranteed to be a Kop hero.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’

is correct. btw, when messi, masher and tevez have got a bit more experience between them then surely argentina are going to be the team to beat in world football. especially with paletta and insua at the back too

no, i think it would be a bargain, he has done his adjustment to the league and proved he can score and create in a struggling side, imagine what he could do in a side that can keep possession?

20M seems like a lot, but I'd rather we spent that on Tevez than 25M on Villa.

Tevez would be a great signing. He is a world class player. Id be happy to fork out 20mill on him. He would change our whole forward dynamic.

Imagine if we somehow got him and Henry. We would be savage.

I would LOVE us to sign Tevez. Saw him and Mascherano at the world cup and both were outstanding. Monster has more or less proved himself already and Tevez likewise.

The only forward I would prefer to Tevez is Henry and perhaps Eto'o. Not sure the other ones we have been linked with will do the job immediately.

He's insanely talented. Watch some of the clips of him playing for the national side, he is frightening. He will play so much better with quality team mates around him too (like Mascherano). His potential at a truly great side would be massive, I just hope it is with us!
