      yes

i'm also of the opinion that hyppia up til 2 years ago, hansen, lawrenson and hughes belong to a higher echelon of defenders.

aggers getting there and I want us to have 2!

carragher is an excellent pro but hes short of that calibre

I honestly think we need to look at our fullbacks before Carragher.

Carragher is an exceptional defender, I'm not at all convinced by the arguments put forward against him. Which are basically he has made mistakes - so has every defender. Our defence lacks pace but I refuse to accept that the way to improve that is to remove the best cover defender we have who also organises the defence. It seems like madness to me.

A good model for our defence would be Milans for me - tactically/positionally aware centrebacks who are decend in the air with highly mobile fullbacks.

I like Finnan and he has been very consistant in the last two years but I think he is far more open to criticism than Carragher. I'm not of the opinion that Riise is crap like a lot of people, he is however undoubtedly the 4th best player in our defence. I think an improvement in one (or long term both) fullback positions would see our defence improve a great deal.

I agree, the full back positions are in far more need of strengthening. I'm with you on both Finnan and Riise.
          .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

I actually think Carragher will go into the same folder as many of the players in history

The one marked "You dont realise how good he was until he was gone"

At least he will be in good company there alongwith Smith, Whelan & Case to name but a few

dont disagree - there room for improvement there too but fullback is a more forgiving role

not really - 2-3 years ago yes maybe - but nesta and maldini both fall into the hyppia category of being top top class defenders now slightly over the hill.
I thought their right back was excellent going forward but struggled v kewell late on. jankolowsky or whoever wouldnt get in our side

i agree about finnan and rise but the point is that CB is SUCH a key spot that if we got a cannavaro, a gallas or a young hyppia, it'd advance the team more than any fullback

Its funny that you put Hughes in there because to me he was the epitomy of a player who had heart and enthusiasm in greater abundance than he actually had talent

What happened to our dream of a team of Carraghers?!!!

He is still tops - we would have not won No.5 without him!

neither of these 2 players fall in that category. both were replaced with superior players in hansen and souey and lfc was not the worse for the passing of either. casey played another 5+ years at brighton and southampton - there werent too many clamours for his return

                        whelan i'll give you

                        IMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

because he was far superior footballer technically and athletically than carragher

                          IMO :whatever:

If one of them had ran back to the goal line they could have cleared before the shot went in. JC is above real criticism, but he just bent down and pulled his socks up, he should have been sprinting back to cover.
