    Pennant to be main man/Burdisso on the way?

    From sky, old news on Pennant and a snippet on Burdisso. The silly season really is well under way! No mention of a source..........

    Jermaine Pennant is determined to help Liverpool become more competitive in the Premiership.

    The winger was hailed as one of Liverpool's best players in the UEFA Champions League final defeat to Milan this week, but he believes the club should continue to strive for improvement.

    The Reds finished 21 points behind Manchester United this season and Pennant wants to put more pressure on the Premiership's finest next term.

    "Getting to two Champions League finals in three seasons is a good achievement for this club and shows how good a team we are," he said.

    "We can get to this final again, but next season we want to do better in the league and get close to challenging Manchester United and Chelsea for the title.

    "I have only been here a season and I know I have improved, but we must look ahead to next season and make sure we can take the club on to another level."

    Regarding his own performance against Milan, Pennant said: "I thought I did well on the night in Athens and the manager was pleased with my performance.

    "But it's all about the team, not me, and we lost so it's disappointing."

    Meanwhile, Liverpool have been linked with a move for Internazionale defender Nicolas Burdisso.

    Rafa Benitez is looking to bring in a number of new players this summer and, according to reports in Italy, will make an official offer to Inter this summer.

    However, Inter are not believed to be ready to part with the Argentine.

      Could be, he's a CB. The one who got his nose broke v Valencia and he's banned for 6 european games.

        i hope pennant goes, he really is not of the calibre we require to push on, surely its not just me that can see that, discard the fact that hes a tryer or hes improving, i dont care about that..i want quality NOW...not potential quality!!!!
        Please please please get rid of the crap this summer..its our best ever opportunity!

          I 90% agree darth but I'd like to keep Pennant as backup.

            I think Rafa is very upset as he saw this as a real missed opportunity to win No.6.

            His tactics were spot on but the calibre of player we had in critical positions for his plan to be successful, i.e. LW, RW and CF, were not of the quality to make Milan pay.

            He seemed so frustrated with having to work with this level of player when he knows what he can achieve with the right backing. The man is a genius and he will be even more successful when (and if) he is backed.

            I fear if there is no movement within the next couple of weeks.... Madrid will smell an opportunity....

              i totally agree that the man is a genius manager, and with the right backing he will go down as a true great, and with us, so thats all good. I just really hope we move on as much as we can this summer, if so i honestly think we can be competing on every front next season, just please get rid of the ****e...houllier may well be coming back to the prem so off load all our crap on him!!

                  Isn't he a full back as well, he has played right back for Argentina before now.

                    He was our most creative wide player this season. That might be an indictment on our wide players, but it's also a reason for him to stay because unless we're bringing in several proven wingers, which we clearly aren't, then he'll be useful backup.

                      thats a real cause for concern then because he is not up to our standard. I know Rafa is good at his job so i have faith that he will get shot of pennant, or at least buy quality so that he is no more than a squad player, carling cup at best. I dont rate him....

                        Of course first choice he's not good enough. I don't think anyone can dispute that. But look at the kind of players other teams have in reserve, Pennant is not all that bad a backup player when you see him in that light. Park Ji Sung and Darren Fletcher for example are hardly great players but they know the ins and outs of their team and have enough quality to be able to come in and do a good job when needed. Maybe in time we will have better backup than Pennant, great, but we're almost certainly not getting two right wingers in this summer so it would be foolish to let him go IMO.

                          I would like to add though that this was Pennants first season anywhere near the first team of a big club. I think he is capable of more then he showed this season, I doubt he will ever be a nailed on first team selection but he could give us a good option for certain games.

                            what did he cost...£7 mill, something like that wasnt it? ****ing big price for someone who we all know shouldnt be anything more than a reserve player i think, id rather sell him and buy in someone younger with more potential, but good enough to act as back up. Havent we aready got a reserve right winger whos meant to be good? jesus give that guy some games!

                              If Paul Anderson had been concistant in the rezzies he would have gotten a chance. He never so that tells its own story for me.

                              Look at our left side: Adam Hammill has done well with the pars, Ray Putterill was great in the youth cup, Leto is meant to be a player highly rated and Kewell is one of the best if he overcomes injuries.

                              And yet we're still linked with Malouda for competition at LW!
