I'm not a season ticket holder, but I agree that those who are, are better fans than fans like me who watch the majority of the games on tv.
I think there is a difference between "supporters" and "fans".
I get to a couple of games per season, buy the shirts and other memorabilia, pay for sky sports, yet I in no way see that as "supporting" the team as much as the people who go to everygame, including the euro games.
Now as the original poster said there is a number of reasons. Living down south, it would cost me a ridiculous amount to go to loads of games, and I have bigger priorities at the moment for my money like buying a house, plus there is no way I could be arsed to travel for 4-5 hours each way all the time.
I think we are all great "fans" of the club, but some "fans" "support" the club better than others. It is as simple as that IMO.

    Hope that makes sense ;D

        Great thread

I grew up and used to live in Wigan and started supporting Liverpool when my Manc supporting dad died at age 8.
Before then I was more into rugby and football wise actually supported Wigan Latics, though this was cause he used to play for them way back when.

His best mate Ian kinda took me under his wing and I went to my first game against Manchester United in April 1988. It was supposed to be a bit of a gesture type thing, as in because his team was playing my dads. From that moment I was hooked though, it was like nothing else before it. I should have been a Manc, but I fell under the Anfield spell. I'd never known anything like it before, you dont get thousands upon thousands of fans singing in unison at rugby games.

We drew 3-3, and I remember worshipping Peter Beardsley from then on

We won the league that year, though we lost the FA cup against Wimbledon, I remember I was heart broken.

From then on, up until I was about 13 or so, I went to nearly every home game on Ian's spare season ticket.

Liverpool Football Club is a very, very important part of my life. I live in London now though, and what i'm trying to do for a living allows me very little time to do other things. I maybe get to like 5 or 6 home games a season, and approx the same for away fixtures down south.

Does not attending games make me any LESS of a supporter??

Come say that to my face
I saw a dead fish on the pavement and thought "what did you expect?"
There's no water round here stupid, should have stayed where it was wet

I used to have a season ticket and now I don't because I got sick of the travelling. The emotional commitment required to do a four hundred mile round trip 15-20 times a season was draining in other areas of life and it was getting to be damaging.

I did learn a lot about football by going regularly and as the seasons pass and it's longer since I did it, then I realize I have less and less understanding of everything that's happened in a match and that my views on a game, on players, etc. are less well-grounded in real knowledge than they used to be.

It's right that you see matches differently on telly and you can see things not seen at the gamer but when I went I always used to watch the telly later on as well since I wanted to see replays etc.

As a result I do tend to give more weight to the opinions of someone who has been to games regularly rather than those who only watch at home. However, an idiot who sees every game is still an idiot so it doesn't mean season ticket holders all have something interesting to say (or vice versa, that armchair fans know nothing).

The idea that one fan is any "better" than any other is intrinsically nonsensical since it entirely depends on your defintion of what makes a good fan.

Ive had a season ticket for 20 years and used to go to most away games, cant now cos i had to miss a year of away games due to buying a house and now only have 1 on my fan card.

I have always belived there was a difference in those who go and those who dont, granted i dont have to travel far. But it really pisses me off when my blue ****e mates who dont go the game give me stick, i tell them to ****in come back when they actualy go and watch a game.

If you live far away and come up 4 or 5 times a season fair play i would call that goin to the game.
If cant be botherd gettin off your arse now and again to try and get tickets and make it to the game, well ****in shame on you cos your missing out.

As for watchin on TV and goin, i belive there must be a big difference, i could not belive how many people on KT backed Cisse, while most people in the ground thought he was ****e.

Im lucky, ive been goin week in week out for 25 years and cant even think about not goin. But as i say i live 10 mins away.

So the moral is support your local team you wooly back *******s

Only messin with the last bit...Honest

IMO, there's no real "better fan" or "worse" fan.

                          My take:

You are NO less of a supporter or No less knowledgeable about football if you don't go to games.

There could be a number of reasons why you don't get over that often.

                          EG:

                          -Don't like to travel
                          -Not enough time
                          -Not enough money
                          -Don't like crowds
-Are just a genuine lazy *******

These are just a couple of a truckload of reasons.

I, myself, only get over to an average of two/three games a season and i only live across the pond.

There will be people that argue the point that you can't know as much about football if you're not a regular which, IMO, is utter cobblers. They will argue that you cant see everything that goes on, on camera but in fact, it is possible to see more from T.V in some cases.

Eg. You have a **** seat in the stadium (If you are at ground level it is hard to look at your players as you would on a chess table, if you get my point)Which is why Allardyce and others like to sit in the stand.

If you are sitting down in the corner, you can't see anything of the "offside" play etc.

Someone who watches a lot of football on T.V will know just as much as someone who goes to matches(more in the case of some)...

The main way of understanding and gaining a good insight on how football should be played is to PLAY it.(At any sort of organised level)
I'd love to attend every Game

When I went to Anfield to see us play Manure it was one of the most emotional experiences of my life - we sang YNWA as if we believed that we could turn the bile-spewing Scum to dust with the passion of our singing. However I had no idea how Heskey missed that chance until I saw it later on MOTD and I didn't really see who scored our goal. I enjoyed the atmosphere more than the game, in fact I spent a lot of the time looking round rather than trying to watch the match. I have to go to a European game one night... and take my kids on the museum tour. Respect to the guys who do go every week, we all know that the fans are what make us special.

I remember that vividly (through a drunken haze). I went fookin berserk when he did that - he basically swung for the shot (goal at his mercy) and his left foot tackled his right before he connected. Unbelievable!
