£615 - THE PRICE OF A PREM SEASON TICKET
      Darren Lewis 05/06/2007

MANCHESTER UNITED head a quartet of Premiership clubs named and shamed for hitting supporters in their pockets with forthcoming season ticket prices.

The champions, taken over by the Glazer family two years ago, have brought fans down to earth with a bump after their stunning title triumph over Chelsea by hiking their average season ticket from £589 to £655.50.

Other top-flight clubs criticised in the latest report include newly-promoted Sunderland, West Ham and Portsmouth - with the south coast club raising their prices by £45 to £620 next term.

Sunderland's season tickets have jumped 19 per cent, which means the average rises from £519.50 to £617.50. The Hammers, meanwhile, have gone up from £675 to £722.50.

And the average in the Premiership next term will be £615.

According to the report, the Premiership's good guys in terms of ticket prices are Wigan, Bolton, Aston Villa and Blackburn. Rovers have slashed their average price from £415 to £387.50, which could be a bargain if the club go on to gain UEFA Cup football through the Inter Toto Cup this summer. Wigan appear to be apologising to fans for this season's poor display with an average £125 price cut. They were the cheapest in the Premiership at £375 - and will remain so at a bargain £250.

Around 7,000 seats regularly went unfilled at the JJB as supporters voted with their feet on a desperate campaign.

At Bolton, a 10 per cent discount - £494 to £444 - has been introduced in the hope the club can win back the 3,000 fans who deserted the Reebok in 2006-07.

And at Villa Park, new owner Randy Lerner has shown a change of regime does not necessarily mean a trip to the bank manager for fans. Villa are dropping their average ticket to below £400.

Of the other clubs in the top four, Arsenal and Chelsea fans are fortunate not to have to dip into their pockets any further as the season ticket prices at both clubs have been frozen. But with an average price of £1,355, Arsene Wenger's men will still be among the most expensive to watch.

They are matched by north London rivals Spurs, whose fees rise from £1,030 to £1,064.50, but FA Cup and Carling Cup winners Chelsea's average is lower at £900.

Liverpool's average has risen by £40 to £675 - but others to freeze their prices include Newcastle, Fulham, Birmingham and Derby.
According to Mirror our average ticket price for ST is the 6th or 7th highets in prem, more expensive than mancs.

understood but if he was paying 610£ last season, 40£ extra will not seem that much in grand scheme of things

Not bad I suppose, considering we're 3rd in the league for the last 2 seasons

But if you're already finding it hard to fork out £610, then to have to pay £650 the next time round is tough isn't it? And if you manage that then it goes up another £30 next year, people will say ah it's only another £30 etc but it doesn't work out as simple as that in reality.

One thing I'd say to any ST holders is, if you find yourself in that situation, do a deal with me and I'll buy half the ST off you, you can even have first pick of the games

I think it's July 2nd - by what I've heard mate. After that it's full whack.

                  So.

The clubs get even more money from tv next season - and we've now got 2 sugar daddies who are willing to fund a new stadium and box us of when it comes to transfers.
The players are already on monstrous amounts of money also - so exactly why has our season ticket gone up?
Oh - and we're bringing out THREE new kits for the coming season which will bring in a good few bob as well.

its the beauty of supporting a club mate and as you pointed out there will be no shortage of people wanting a ST..cheap skates like yous for example

That's pretty much the crux of the matter , it's not the rise it's the actual amount. I should be OK this year but by the time we get a new stadium I'm going to be fooked.

My gas , leccy , mortgage and season ticket have all risen by well over 5% whereas my pay and that of my missus has risen by just over 1%. With 2 kids it gets harder and harder to justify each year , but with 60k on the waiting list they don't give a ****. I was talking about this witrh Al Parry before - the more you think about the way the game is going the more it depresses the **** out of you.

My first season ticket was £40 and if my pay had risen at the same percentage I'd have been buying a fking executive box.

Ridiculous and I agree with you about how the game is going but nothing will ever change until everyone stops going and thats never going to happen.

I've been on the list seven years now. Any idea how many years the front of the queue is at by now?

                                I might. Seriously.

Maybe not this season as my view isn't firm yet. But quite probably next.

I'm just too cynical about it all to gain the sort of joy that I used to once get from the game.
