Frankly, yes. United's package for Rooney could be worth up to £30M; they also paid £28M for Veron. Chelsea spent £30M on Shevchenko. That's not to say I think we need him, though. Nor do I believe we should spend that sort of sum on one player. A quick striker with good finishing, a decent winger who can beat a man and cross a ball accurately, and someone at left-back would do for me. We could probably raise the funds for those within the budget of selling surplus players and bringing in TV revenue and prize money.

While I would feel disappointed in Gillett and Hicks if it turns out that their PR and bluster was all for show, it doesn't mean that the end of the world is nigh. We've a very good side that just lacks one or two qualities.
