Manchester United will begin the defence of their Barclays Premier League title against Reading, while newly-promoted Birmingham City face a mouth-watering opening-day trip to Chelsea.

In an intriguing opening weekend of the 2007/08 Barclays Premier League season, the Royals will provide a stiff first test at Old Trafford as Sir Alex Ferguson's men seek to retain their crown.

The sides met four times in all last season, with United winning the corresponding fixture 3-2 on December 30 thanks to a Cristiano Ronaldo brace, while the same player grabbed United's equaliser in a 1-1 draw at the Madejski Stadium in September.

Those results were mirrored in the FA Cup fifth round, Brynjar Gunnarsson earning former United winger Steve Coppell's side a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford before a three-goal blitz in the opening six minutes saw the Red Devils win a dramatic replay despite Reading's spirited fightback.

The Blues' reward for regaining their top-flight status is an immediate trip to Stamford Bridge and a chance to test themselves against Jose Mourinho's multi-million pound team.

Steve Bruce spent big on the strikeforce which fired his side to second place in the Championship, but Gary McSheffrey, Rowan Vine and Cameron Jerome will now face off with the exalted likes of Didier Drogba and Andriy Shevchenko.

The other promoted sides are both at home, as Derby County host Portsmouth and champions Sunderland welcome Tottenham Hotspur to the Stadium of Light.

Sam Allardyce will make a fascinating debut in the Newcastle United dug-out as he takes his troops to former club Bolton Wanderers, having served the Lancashire outfit with distinction for seven years.

Arsenal and Liverpool will be looking to launch improved title challenges having failed to seriously test United and Chelsea for the last two years - the Gunners kick off with a London derby against Fulham at the Emirates Stadium, while Rafael Benitez's side travel to Aston Villa.

West Ham United, who escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth last season, will host a Manchester City side also desperate to improve on a below-par campaign.

North-west neighbours Everton and Wigan Athletic clash at Goodison Park in a fixture which yielded a 2-2 draw last season.

And Blackburn Rovers travel to Middlesbrough to complete an exciting first weekend.
