    Signing players as marketing tools

Where do people stand on this?

There’s been paper talk that both Chelsea and Fulham have been under pressure to sign a Korean because of their current sponsorship deal but would people accept it if we suddenly brought in a handful of Asian, American and Australian players just to promote our ‘brand’ overseas and try to get a foot in the door of fledgling markets?

I can’t think of a single Asian or American who has been a huge Premiership success although you could maybe make a case for Brian McBride but if a sub-standard player guaranteed a boost in LFC merchandise sales would it matter?

I’ve lived in Australia since December and although ‘soccer’ is way behind the likes of rugby and Aussie Rules in terms of popularity, you still see a fair number of LFC shirts around in the streets and many more than the likes of Chelsea and Utd. Media coverage of football is very much Socceroo-orientated e.g you won’t get a story about Liverpool without a mention of Kewell: the build-up to Athens was almost entirely focussed on whether Harry would be fit in time. Even the likes of Middlesborough get their fair share of coverage due to Schwarzer and Viduka.

Thoughts anyone? If nothing else it’s a diversion from silly season…

Well Madrid tried it and it worked for so long before the wheels come off.

If their good enough to be a back up player I don't see the problem, any less than that and it's just a waste.

madrid made a profit of 90 million euros last year, and most of it is contributed to beckham. that is a reason why they can afford to offer 70 million euros for kaka, and also they need a big name to keep turning in profits, i know kaka isn't as big of a commercial value but he's one of the biggest names and if madrid handle it right as i'm sure they will they will profit hugely in the comming years of him signing even though he'll cost them a handfull...

so if it means that we get good players on the pitch and will benefit the club financially of it then i'm all for it...

I don't see a problem with it as long as the player is good enough to be a squad player, any less than that and we all know Rafa wouldn't have it. However if a player is guaranteed to rake the cash in, in a foreign market then it'd be something to think about, suppose it depends on your morals.

wheni was out in S Korea, who have great interest in there national game, the only football strips i saw out there were Scums and readings due to them having park and whatever he is called for reading. If it adds a few quid into the coffers to buy better players i am all for it.

i dont think that rafa would ever consider buying a player for their marketing potential, although it would be a nice added bonus. (god re-signing is a perfect example of this) rafa's priority is always a player who wants to sign for the club and signs contracts quickly without ****ing about with personall demands. i personally think this is why he does not like owen... cos he is a little mercenary... at 9 million good ****in value !!!

When Real Madrid signed Beckham from Man Utd for £25m, it is reported that they made the transfer fee back within a week from shirt sales!!

So its almost as if Real got paid to take a quality player like Beckham ... now, i think thats a fantastic peice of business by Real, but when it comes to getting players just because of their nationality / market they appeal to, then i dont agree with that (unless the player is good enough).

The board would certainly consider it when as player is requested as it makes a massive difference to the net price. Lack of 'brand enhancement' was one of my biggest worries about Bent's price.

It is worth considering marketing as a factor in a signing, particularly for squad players or those you hope will develop. Players for the first team should be bought for football alone. You would have to pay a premium to buy a player with marketing power at any rate.
Generally though it hasn't bought much cash to the PL clubs that have tried to bring in players from Asian markets hoping to increase revenue streams (see Everton and indeed Reading). It is possible to do things over a longer period - along with having Park United have a long history of tours to the middle east and have been to the US on a number of preseasons.
I suspect the best way to raise the clubs profile is touring, training camps and feeder clubs. It has to be taken as a long term process.

There are only a few players with that marketing value (Ronaldinho is now bringing in more money than Beckham for example) but they are all top players. So it's not simply buying a marketing commodity but also a quality player, which makes deals like that work.

Torres would be ideal for this though.

Brad Friedel would probably be the best yank or Tim Howard.
