"Atletico Madrid had better offers and the player had better offers," Benitez told the Liverpool Echo.

"But he always wanted to join Liverpool. That was the key for me.

"We needed to work hard because there were other clubs who wanted him that we knew about - other clubs offering more money.

"But the player said straight away 'I want to join Liverpool'. He said we were his first choice and that was the key for me.

"He has taken a pay cut to come here. Okay he is still on a very good contract because he is a top player.

"But to be a successful club you need players with passion and Fernando has passion."

"If Gerrard continues to play up front, leaving this lack of creativity and intelligence in Midfield, the season WILL be over by Xmas."

I still don't think we'll finish in the top 4 this season."

I'll just add that like you I have wanted Torres to sign big time. When all the polls were flying about over what striker to sign he was always my first choice.

      So I'm ****ing made up!

      Me too!

looking to see the good here - because i think it will take a season or more for torres to adapt to the premiership - i'd love to think that other clubs offered him bigger wages but that he's the type of guy who accepts a pay cut as a recognition of further development to his game needed.

jumping to conclusions but if this is true - coupled with the fact that he's a boring fitness/training/football obsessive - these are signs of an excellent mentality. i'm feeling the first gentle stirrings of excitement.

This is exactly what Rafa has always said is a major priority for him with players. And so it should be. This is obviously why our interest in Malouda seemed to disappear overnight, and why players like Kuyt and Torres have been brought in over others of similar ability/price bracket.

This is good. This is very good. Amazing how the whole vibe of the summer has drastically changed with this one.

Oh, @ BadPiggy - flmao. Nah, I ain't going near that thread

Homo Sissoko started that forum. I merely presented a defense of my opinions, which had been made fun of by some posters here. It gets funnier everytime you reference it, though.

I think Mancini would be an excellent addition; I rate him much higher than Malouda and, playing with Totti (who tends to have the entire game played through him), I think his best is yet to come on the wing. I hope Rafa gets his man again.

So who were these other teams that were after him? Cos there was certainly nothing in the mainstream media about anyone else being involved...which is something I was wondering myself the other day. Didn't anyone else think it a bit strange that such a 'top prospect' only seemed to have one club after him?

There were other bids similar and higher than ours. I stated that last week

Not sure which clubs though. It will probably surface later

there have been reports lately saying both inter and man city matched the buy out clause in his contract...

I think the main thing here is that players come to Liverpool because they want to play for us and sometimes even take pay cuts. I would hate to be a Chelsea supporter because players only go there for the money
