can't really see it. it'll take more than one trophy signing to get close next season. We were so far off the pace last one that it'll take a huge improvement.

I agree. We were well behind the Mancs last season and they’ve spent £50m (plus probably another striker on the way) to improve their squad. Our realistic aim in the forthcoming season IMO is to get a settled squad and to close the gap on the top two.

I'm going to wait and see who else we buy in. We are at least one attacking midfielder away from having a chance I believe. It is not easy to judge the strength of a squad until a few matches have been played - right up until Christmas last year I thought Man United had no hope of the title due to a lack of depth in their squad.

I still think we have a better set of second string specialist players. They have a couple of versatile players who last season stepped up (Fletcher, O'Shea and Brown deserve a lot of credit). We need however to improve the first team.

I think the criticism of Rafas two deep lying central midfielders is a bit of a red herring. Playing the players we can in those positions, like Gerrard and Alonso, they can be very creative if we have good movement from a flexible front four (i.e. two striker + wingers or 1 striker and three attacking midfielders). I also think that in an ideal world it would allow us to release our fullbacks to play a bigger role in attack. Currently in our squad I think Aurelio is the only player we play in those positions who presents a real danger to the opposition.

More quality is needed for us to win the league.
With Torres and a couple more signings i would expect us to break into the top 2 this season, and to be a damn sight closer than we were last year.
IMO, Rafa has to make sure we have a good crack at it and are at the very least still in the frame by Christmas.
Possible make-or-break season.

I like the optimism of this thread. Sadly I'm with the pessimists and am far from convinced.

Now we've signed Torres, some are creaming and feeling that we're gonna win the league. It's been happening for a long time.

Spot on, we won't win it next season but we will get a lot closer, I would hope to be still in contention in April and be about 5pts behind and in second at the end of the season. If we do that there is no reason why we cant do it the following season.

Listening to doom and gloom merchants ? No way, I'm far too brilliant to do that and too rational to believe we're suddenly flush with money.

If you read my recent posts, I said that we've probably coughed up £ 15.7 M pounds in signing Torres, therefore hardly breaking the bank.

Rafa seemed happy yesterday and that will do for me.

Every year since he's been at Liverpool he has always made a comment along the lines of "We are working hard to bring new players in, we a little money not a lot but we will see". Yesterday he said we now want wingers nothing about lack of funds. Where you are getting that we are skint from is beyond me. The count? Tom? Come on Fredo your better than that.

Not basing it on anything mate, just harsh facts. Whilst we are doing a reasonable job buying talent, it seems we could easily be left behind by Chelsea and Manure, if they decide to splash the money on players such as Tevez, Malouda, Alves and Pato.

In any case, we're discussing things in here, and it's all about opinions and deductions. We'll just have to wait & see until the season starts if we could really be in a position to aim for the title.

I am a miserable ******* so I'm pretty sure we won't win the league, i would really love to think we would but i'm not convinced yet - we need (imo) at least 2 possibly 3 new players - if we signed heinze/milito, simao/mancini and tevez then I would be a hell of a lot more excited

Although i'm more than happen with the signing of torres and he looks a great player there is no way of knowing how he will settle - if we brought a couple of more exciting players in and hit the ground running we have a chance tho if the Scum sign Tevez they will be ****ing strong.
