    Anyone remember Pennant

Everyone is getting a bit too carried away with this winger(s) thing. We IMO will sign a high profile left winger and then a versatile, cheap midfielder (Yossi) to fit in when needed. Stevie and Pennant have the right covered between them. You have to remember Stevie wont play much is the Centre due to Masch, Xabi, Momo so he will be on the right a fair amount.

Plus can everyone not remember Pennant being about our best player in the CL final?

But we cant have everyone!! Xabi and Masch will play the important games in the middle. Stevie has to play and I think Rafa wants 2 up front. That only leaves room for a lefty with Pennant and Kewell as options. That is balance, not doing a Chelski and signing everyone!!

Pennant is pretty decent backup but he is not good enough to be first choice. We need someone that offers more. Pennant's crossing can be an asset, but he is limited to that.

Agreed back up to Stevie. And Yossi as further back up for all the midfield as garcia provided. If we signed 2 wingers then 2 from Xabi, Momo, Stevie, Masch would always miss out

Pennant is a good squad player but we need better if we are to challenge

I would still want to bring in a right and left winger

SG is a central midfielder, so that's where I'd want him to play. Meaning a right sided player needed. If that's Benayoun, fair enough.

                  Assuming we play 2 upfront

Ok then, based on Stevie being a central midfielder, something I dont believe Rafa believes he is, what was the point in retaining Momo. I take it people would roughly agree with this pecking order the CM

                    1.Stevie
                    2.Xabi
                    3.Masch
                    4.Momo
                    5.Lucus

                      I would go

                      AM

                      1. Stevie
                      2. Lucas

                      DM
                      Mash
                      Alonso

                      the Maruader
                      Momo

you cant really group them in pecking order when they are different sort of midfielders

I just think that we have seen, for the important games Rafa sits do DM in the middle. I think Alonso and Masch are the favoured ones here, with a new winger and Stevie on the right/free when we have the ball. I think you can have too much of a good thing and Pennant should be allowed to develop.

Not so long ago our Spanish scount said Alves was not a target because we were happy with the emergence of Pennat

crap - If we are going to win the league we need two quallity wide men, one of the reasons our strikers don't score enough is we don't stretch teams enough - Gerrard can do a job on the right but he drifts in and tends to wander so we get narrow, Pennant played well in Athens but he is no Robben, Ronaldo, Giggs etc... Kewell is never fit and Aurelio and Riise are not enough for the left and are mainly wing backs.

We need players with pace who can take defenders on, stay wide, stretch defences, ping in good crosses and score goals.

                          We need at least one.

If we're tight on cash, then I could be content with Pennant on the right for the moment, providing he retains his form from the end of last year and under the provision that we sign a goal scoring LW.

However, long term, unless he improves significantly (especially goal tally) then we need better IMO

Pennant was really good in the final. I dont want us to turn into Chelski. One winger is enough
