Lucas deal not cut and dried

    Today's Times:

BenÍtez hopes to be joined in Switzerland by Lucas Leiva, the 20-year-old Brazilian midfield player who agreed to move to Anfield in May from Grémio in a £5 million deal. However, the transfer is dependent on Leiva acquiring the necessary documents allowing him to play in England and Liverpool reserve the right to cancel the move if they cannot secure the player’s eligibility.

Liverpool officials have been working to secure an Italian passport for Leiva and BenÍtez is hoping that the documentation will be in place in time for him to join the squad this week. “He is the captain of the Brazil Under20 side and won player of the year in his country last year, so we know he has quality,” BenÍtez said. “We also believe he has the mentality and the character you need to do well in England.”

I'm hoping it's just a formality. Apparently an Italian passport should be forthcoming given his lineage.

That would be Anderson who is a member of the full international squad as opposed to the U20s. Not that he has played but i really can't see why people are so exercised about this.

An EU passport would be much easier to handle than a work permit as then there will be no having to play requirements of any form and he would be an easier asset to move on if necessary. I hope you are right I like what i have heard about him.

Yeah bloody beaurocracy and red tape.

Of course if we allow every Tom Dick & Harry to have a British Passport it'd be treason? But not those Italians!

Suppose this would be the same reason why we haven't seen Leto included thus far, maybe we will see more of him after all, as for Lucas i;d be highly surprised if there were many problems

Especially as the Echo reckons it'll all be sorted this week.

Let's hope so. I'm excited about Lucas ("oo err missus", any oldies remember where that was from?), Vickery, who I respect, has said that he is the future of the Brazillian CM. The few games I saw him in, he looked pretty much the complete central midfielder! And still so young, we could be sorted in CM for the next 10 years between him and Momo

Is that not the key requirement for a permit?

Or they need to be an exceptional talent which, according to reports and that award he's just won, he is.
