I know what you mean - the vowel's not quit a i and not quite an e. Derek just sounds amusing, and not far off

why couldn't he have just lied and said it's pronounced Derk Kite, veryone would have been happy then. Well except maybe him, but it's a small price to pay, become a legendary goalscorer and have no one say your proper name.

Let me get my head around this - so the correct pronunciation rhymes with SHOUT? I don't think it will stick. Its like telling people here in Australia that soccer is actually pronounced as football.

Yes, with some emphasis on the K (not quite Kh, but almost)

theres no direct way to describe the pronunciation using english syllables

"Deeeerk" (an elongated version of the english i) "ccchhhh" (ilongated like you were gonna spit) - ouwyt with a weirrd blending of the w and y that no english word contains.

the ending is very similar to the correct pronunciation of molby and hysen which led to some people thinking it was glen "hussein"!

its a northern european thing - effin freaks

I like that. I was always a great admirer of Cyril Regis in his Coventry days.
