Really - is there gonna be a thread on here where you're not gonna slip that in?

We hear yer fella. Now turn the fookin' record over !!!!

Sorry mate. But it does my f*ckin head in that it's sooooo obvious and that we haven't done anything about it. I'd love to be proved wrong this season but I fear I won't be. I'm older than most on here and ache for us to be champions again, and it frustrates the life out of me to see us "wasting" £xm on the likes of Benayoun, when we're crying out for a player "a la Barnes 1987" to make a real difference in this era of not being able to lose 6 games and still win the league. We have lacked so much in the final 3rd in recent times, and I really don't want to see another quality striker (i.e. Torres) hamstrung by a lack of creativity / service.

Sorry for repeating myself, but to me its so obvious and necessary. But I do hear ya!

FWIW - echo those sentiments 100%.

If we'd have bought Alves for his supply/service I'd have said we've had a great summer in the xfer market - but that's another story/thread.

I agree entirely. Had we signed Alves or Quaresma and Heinze / Chiellini / Baines on top of what we've already got I would have said we would have done perfectly what was required. As I think we'll get Heinze or Chiellini TBH I think we're one short, but that's all. But of course, that one position is such a critical one.

Hansen got 26 caps for Scotland but it wasn't down to Ferguson, who was only in charge of Scotland for 10 games. At that time, most, if not all of our players were club-first players.I remember a great anecdote of a pre-match meeting amongst the Scottish team before a match with the Republic of Ireland. A few players were asked to stand up in front of the group and
talk about the strengths and weaknesses of their Irish clubmates. Albiston of United got up and talked about Moran, McGrath and Stapleton. Graeme Sharp got up to talk about Kevin Sheedy. When it was Kenny's turn to stand up to talk about Whelan and Beglin, he stood up and said "I have nothing to say" and sat back down.

I wonder if the fact that our players were so used to winning and picking up trophies that going off to play for Wales, Scotland, Ireland etc (we hardly had any England internationals did we?) was kind of an anti-climax?

I remember watching the famous World Cup game against USSR when he crashed into the other Scottish defender leaving Ivan a 30 yard run to an empty net (Alan Rough!). I was 12 and gutted because they had been on top up to that point. The whole bar groaned in unison.

In a bar at 12, eh?

Much as I like Daniel Agger im staggered that some people rate him as highly as jocky. Times like this you realise you are getting old as the only way people could say that, would be if they hadnt actually seen jocky play.

Nothing against agger btw, Agger is a ****in superb player, but I said the day jocky retired that there will never be a centre half even half as good as him ever again. Ive seen nothing in the past 16 years to suggest to me that this will ever change.

If I was to liken agger to a former centre half it would be Gary Gillespie, who is one of the most under-rated players to ever play for this club. Gillespie was a ****in trmendous footballing centre half in the same style as Agger, and also had a superb eye for goal. Injuries, and the fact that a certain Alan Hansen had air in his lungs prevented him from having the true impact on liverpool that his talents deserved.

Very good call re Gillespie. I vividly remember his goal and celebration in the 9-0 against Palace. "Gillespiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiieeeeeeee"
