Hold onto your horses, but before we nail this fella to the goalposts, has anybody seen him play? He might be a decent keeper, thus allowing Carson to get his wish of regular Premiership football at Villa, thus giving as a loan fee, and (hopefully) putting a clause into the loan contract so that we can recall Carson, should Reina sustain a bad injury!

I doubt if they are willing to pay £2.5m for a loan you could include such a clause. Losing a first choice keeper mid season can be disastrous for any club (just ask Chelsea), so I'm sure the £2.5m is an assurance that this can't happen.

Our second choice keeper will be a problem as long as Reina plays for us. He is the best young keeper in the world so any keeper who signs for us knows that they have no chance to be number one.

I hope Rafa insists on the nice Recaros he had at the Mestalla rather than the cheap plastic seats at Anfield. Some Premiership grounds have them now as well and they'd be much comfier for Charles...

If he's just lost his place that would indicate that he was first choice and another keeper has just been brought in as opposed to him being a permanent benchwarmer

Had a very good season last yr at Charlton, and is a good keeper. I'm not saying he will displace Pepe.

Thank you Captain Obvious!! Carson is more than capable, I get that he may not want to sit on the bench but there's no reason to think he wont challenge for Pepe's place.

He's hardly an unknown quantity to our manager or scouts so im not really sure that has any relevance.

Know that for a fact do you? The relevance is there are plenty of players over the last three years that have been known quantities to the staff that have been moved on b/c they were deemed not good enough. Just b/c we are signing/have signed this fella doesn't mean he's good enough.

Well apart from the fact that Reina absolutely pisses all over him in every department, no none at all. Carson needs an injury or Reina to suddenly turn into Dudek otherwise he has zero chance.

Pepe has hardly missed a game through injury in two years and during that time he has been superb.

I''d rather see Carson go out on loan for another season and get some more experience with us having an able deputy to come in and play the odd game/part game when required.

Its hardly going to do Carson's development much good if he is sitting on the bench week in, week out. He needs to be getting regular first team football. Even if his future lies away from Anfield, we will only bump up his price if he has been playing regulary in the premiership.

Its a tough one for us the keeper position.....Pepe is easily first choice and as such will be picked in any and all important games.....but, who would be happy knowing they will only ever play mickey mouse cup games and the games after we win the league? Tough call.....but id rather be 2nd choice for Liverpool than 2nd choice for lens.......

yes your right,but he`s just lost his place and is now 2nd choice after 6 yrs at the club.

He was an ever-present last season.

And if he's been displaced at the start of this season, it is more likely to be because his departure was inevitable.

Itandje isn't in Reina's class but he is decent.

I'm not sure about the signing, not because of his GK ability (never seen the geezer play or even heard of him!) but more because it puts Reina in a comfort position, he now knows this guy has been bought in to play second fiddle and thus he moves into the pipe and slippers zone knowing that there is no real competition for places.
