A 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 is where Alonso is most at home, with another holding midfielder behind or next to him to allow him to focus more on playmaking rather than playbreaking.

4-4-2 esp with Gerrard means he has too many defensive responsibilities and his creativity is stifled.

Mascher should always play HM if fit. It's a no brainer.
I think it is a no brainer that it depends on the opposition and what result we need.

He's also developed the nasty habit of giving away dangerous free kicks right outside our box...

I can see Alonso playing a lot in our home games this season. He is the type of holding player we need at home and The Chief is the type we need playing away.
Did you see the size off those chickens?

Ahh, of course. We should only play Mascher/Gerrard if it's important to win the match. Agreed

well but the better he got tactically, the better his positioning and tackling got the more passes seemed to go astray. he tends to give away possession cheaply unlike his usual self. he was our best passer bar none and i really wonder what changed that.

He's better-looking than Mascherano. That's enough for me.
                          .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

Dear God. I just suffered the same faith. Not that work is too hard (obviously) but boring beyond believe. You got to ask yourself one question: How the **** did I end up in this office?

Take a look at Alonso's PL assist rate since he arrived. It really isn't that impressive. When you take into account that he played CM with Hamann as HM in the first season in quite a few games it's actually a bit disappointing.

He had some great side changes and could open up games and give us space. Against Spurs at Anfield first season he was fantastic and it was clear that Spurs didn't know how to cope.

These days he's just too easy to shut down because he can't dribble and pass midfielders. One trick pony on the ball and they all know it.
