    A 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 is where Alonso is most at home, with another holding midfielder behind or next to him to allow him to focus more on playmaking rather than playbreaking.

    4-4-2 esp with Gerrard means he has too many defensive responsibilities and his creativity is stifled.

          Mascher should always play HM if fit. It's a no brainer.

              I can see Alonso playing a lot in our home games this season. He is the type of holding player we need at home and The Chief is the type we need playing away.

                                Take a look at Alonso's PL assist rate since he arrived. It really isn't that impressive. When you take into account that he played CM with Hamann as HM in the first season in quite a few games it's actually a bit disappointing.

                                He had some great side changes and could open up games and give us space. Against Spurs at Anfield first season he was fantastic and it was clear that Spurs didn't know how to cope.

                                These days he's just too easy to shut down because he can't dribble and pass midfielders. One trick pony on the ball and they all know it.
