What I think he lacks is confidence to get past his man and get a shot in himself. I can't ever remember a time when he's done it. Plenty of times he has a one-on-one with the full back and is content to get the ball to somebody else when he should be more direct and selfish and have a go himself. He's playing well enough to do it but somehow lacks the confidence.
I agree that lack of confidence has been an issue for him in the past, but I think he looked supremely confident yesterday (in spite of the England snub). Only played an hour and was probably MOTM. We've got a lot of players who are performing well at the mo, and thankfully he's right up there with them.

He had a very good game if you don't consider the above.
He had one or two crosses that were not up to standard but for the most part he shone yesterday.
He has gradually grown as a player and is improving game on game.
I would've agreed before the end of the season his final/end product was lacking but his overall play had improved.
But this season everything has improved he's looking to pick out clever balls.

This steady, almost continual improvement from Pennant has been a delight to watch. He must keep it up though, and I'd also like to see him put an end to that rather pathetic streak of small-man syndrome petulance.
Generally I'm not one for petulance and would agree with your sentiments. However JP's attitude seems to have become more petulant the better he's played.

It's almost like he's becoming arrogant because his confidence is high, so at present I'm happy to put up with the occasional temper tantrum so long as his steady improvement continues.

Yep, I'd go along with that.

He is still only young and I think that under Rafa's expert tuteledge will continue to improve year on year for some time to come. The next dimension to add to his game is obviously goals or at least a consistent goal threat .

I think we have seen that Rafa is very happy to ship out players after only a short period if he doesn't think they will make the grade, his patience and persistence with JP is now paying rich dividends.

I'm totally with you on this Shaggy, i too had the same attitude towards him when he first sidned up with us but now, he's making me look a fool, and good on him i say.

The question is, can he keep it up all season! only time will tell but, if he carries on with his form at present, he will have totally justified his transfer fee and in the mean time saved the club a small fortune too.

Keep it up JP, i knoe you've got it in you

I was crying out for people to give him a chance when he first came and it's time for me to look smug

But seriously, he looks very good, very dangerous, can move with the ball at his feet quickly and is a constant threat.

                  Well in.

Hey Sid, nice to meet you the other day.
I'm with you mate I wanted people to give him a chance as a youngster he had serious skill it was just whether he could reproduce that week in week out.
He still needs to add to his game but overall his contribution is very good.

Likewise mate, just a shame a few more of the dredges off here didnt get down there

Pennant's form has been steadily improving since January and as you rightly say, he's not complete yet. Although, other than goal-getting, i find it hard to think what else he's missing.

Looking a very shrewd signing now at £7m when you consider talk of £20m or more for the likes of Queresma. Not saying JP is better, but sometimes it's about who's better and right for the TEAM, as opposed to who's simply more talented. I'm delighted with JP.

I'm one who didn't think Pennant would be good enough when he came to LFC and, yes, he was a major disappointment early last season. But he's improved by leaps and bounds since last December, and is proving me wrong as well.

But I'm glad he's proving me wrong. I don't know when I began to expect good things from him, but one reason I wasn't bothered that we didn't land an RW this summer was Pennant's improvement over the course of last season. So far this year, his performances have been as good as anyone else's, and it would take a BIG financial outlay to get someone who is likely to play better than he is right now.

I'd like to see him put in a few more 'killer' crosses......ones that really cause defenders to panic.

I think to often his crosses lack a little venom.

That said he's been first rate from the middle of last season to present....long may it continue!

IMHO JP has probably been our best player so far this season
