Liddell was 40s and 50s, brilliant wing player, we were called Liddellpool by some back then - some people even have him down as our greatest ever player

DioufI think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

Spackman
He was awesome in that 1987/88 season...
A very integral part of that wonder year..."In fact I’m going to make a promise which will be welcomed by many. If there’s no finance secured by the opening day of the season, I’m going to hang up my keyboard and close KOPTALK down."

The trouble with this kind of the thing is that it depends on your age, which is why Titanic was voted best film of all time not long back.Originally posted by paulcooper4Really bored now, footy postponed for ****ty internationals, and the transfer window is shut. Running out of things to talk about so how about a best ever Liverpool XI thread?
post your best XI and reasons for them being in there.
Its harder than you think, some unbelievable players have to be left out.
anyway, heres mine :-
Goalkeeper - Ray Clemence - Mr Dependible, only elisha scott comes close, but I never saw him play!
Right Back - Phil Neal - Cant argue with his trophy haul, dependibility and what a penalty taker!
Centre backs - Carragher/Hansen - Hansen picks himself, best defender ive ever seen. Carra JUST beats off yeats + lawrenson for my vote
Left Back - Nicol - Chico was so good you could play him anywhere (and we did), but i felt he was best at LB. was hard to pick him over gerry byrne mind.
Right wing - Ian Callaghan - just couldnt leave him out the side. his appearance record will never be beaten IMO.
Centre Mid - Gerrard/Souness - Got to pick the best 2 centre mids ive seen in a red shirt.
Left Wing - John Barnes - this was hard, what with Billy Liddel and stevey Heighway. But barnes between 1987-90 was unplayable.
Centre Forwards - Dalglish/Rush - hardest position for me to pick TBH. Hard leaving out the likes of hunt/st.john/keegan/toshack/beardley etc.
Now your turn.....
I can't see any way on God's earth how any all-time best XI could have Neal over Smith, who was a vastly, vastly superior player. He was also a quite fantastic centre-back, way ahead of Jamie Carragher. Emlyn Hughes would also have to be in somwhere, he was that good.

I kid you not - in a UK poll on TV or in a publication. In the same way, Oasis - a fine group and all that - had one of their tracks voted the best ever with something by the Beatles trailing forlornly in its wake.Originally posted by univofchicagoFor reals???
Basically anyone under 20-25 - and most people who votes in such polls seems to be in that group - have no other reference points, so batty teenage girls who wept over Titanic vote for it in their droves.
Similarly in these "best XI" threads, old geezers like me saw Liverpool players 40 or more years ago so can say with 100% confidence that players like Neal, Keegan etc would never make a best XI and the likes of Carragher, Fowler, McManaman etc, fine servants thought they have been in different ways, would also never make any best XI.
Smith is the only player that I saw from the mid-60s teams who would always be in my all-time best Liverpool XI - and we had some very fine players back then - with Hughes and Clemence from late 60s onwards also included. But then again I'm not old enough to have seen Billy Liddell, so have no idea how good he was - the generational thing again
