Should Liverpool have an affinity to Rangers or Celtic?

I appreciate your reply and it is well thought out and difficult to argue against. I'd say that any argument might come from those older than yourself who do remember links between Liverpool and one or other of the Glasgow clubs. In fact I am not going to argue against such logic. What I shall propose is that Liverpool born supporters of 30 or more years ago would at that time and perhaps now ally themseles to Rangers, whilst Liverpool supporters of recent times (not necessarily of Liverpool) might more likely have a soft spot for Glasgow Celtic.

Complete bollocks mate.Originally posted by Venton View PostDon't think that means anything any more mate, not these days. Although my auntie still spits when catholic funerals drive past. Weird considering my (blood) uncle is an irish/italian catholic from the scotland road but there you go.
My Celtic mate told me the other day that Celtic sang ynwa first. He is a consummate bull****ter but history throws up weirder **** than that. Anyone know their history well enough to say for real?

They do have some decent fans but I have to agree with the sectarian part....no place for it and the clubs aren't doing enough to stop it.Originally posted by spud_gun View PostNo.
Showers of arseholes the pair of them. Both as bad as each other. Sectarianism is not somthing i'd want attaching itself to Liverpool.
Every club has it's arseholes, we have plenty that go to Anfield every week but happily it's a minority.

Ok Read and be Educated
We were traditionally the protestant club and everton the catholic club.............. even to this day there are still nuns and priests who go to goodison
This dates back to some bishop who told everyone to go support everton because they had some irish lads in their team
therefore our affinity was traditionally with Rangers
However things started to change after we signed Dalglish from Celtic
It culminated in 1989 when the first game we played after Hillsborough was a friendly against Celtic, pubs had signs outside saying " Liverpool supporters only" and had laid on free food .........(and in a lot of caes free beer)
This is why many supporters allegiance swung from Rangers to Celtic
Thankfully religion is no longer an issue in Liverpoool and many catholics now support Liverpool ( and presumably some misguided protestant fools support the bllue****e)Lawrenson:"Well thats 3 good chances they have had in the first 3 minutes of this half"
Motson:"" Yes Mark, you could almost say that they have had 3 chances in as many minutes"
Lawrenson: Errr I thought I just did say that, John"

**** Rangers, **** Celtic. Both clubs have got tossers of the highest order. Wish we had a link with Motherwell, Hibs or Livingstone.I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06
Are you watching Manchester United? Are you watching Chelsea? This is Liverpool F.C taking over the bloody world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

slightly off topic...a guy in work went to a match in goodison a couple of years back and - whoever they were playing - he was shocked at loads of racist chants from the everton fans. older colleagues nodded sagely and said everton has a history of racism. is this true?Felching ≠ Gerbilling

I've always associated Liverpool with Celtic to be honest but I remember my dad saying Liverpool was for Protestants and Everton was for Catholics. Most of my family are Evertonians but I don't think it has anything to do with the fact we are all Catholics. In fact I know so because my dad was a Protestant (before he married my mum and became a Catholic) but he was also a staunch Evertonian.
Who cares really anyway?
It's **** all to do with religion now if it ever was.

"Such ****e" with respect is still recent history. My grandfathers related to it and they are in living memory for me and I respected them both. However things pass away and sectarianism has passed away in Liverpool, though not in Glasgow as yet.. I relate to Glasgow as a city and to their mentality being like minded to Liverpool. This is heartfelt by me.
Although recent history, religious bigotry is still very much alive and well, not just in Glasgow but in Liverpool as well.
i went to an Old firm match about 4 years ago with an mate from liverpool whose family are from Glasgow, and is an ardent Rangers fan. I've always liked celtic because as a kid I liked their green kit. The atmosphere was electric but i was appalled at the bile spouted by both sets of fans. I've been going to anfield for twenty odd years and used to go away regularly as well but i've never experienced an atmosphere as hate filled as that day at Ibrox. My mate also told me in no uncertain terms to support Rangers that day.
As for Liverpool, whilst there is no obvious religious divide, it still exists in cetain quarters. I used to work for a company that was a catholic one. I'm a protestant but after i'd worked there for a year or so i was told all the directors were Catholic, always had been , always will be.
i work in the education sector and it is virtually impossible for me to get a job in a Catholic school. Such mindless bigotry has no place in a modern society.
Quite rightly, racist beliefs are outlawed but it is still a common practice for discrimination to carry on based on religious upbringing.AKA Heighway No9

Was made aware that Liverpool were a protestant team to support when I was young, although I already supported them by this stage. Was told United were for well I'll not say the word but they meant catholics. To me the idea of having Liverpool linked with some ****ty tat for tat bollocks like the Old Firm is depressing.
Other clubs over here are linked further with it though. All the "True Blues" haved reared the heads after years of hibernation, now declaring that the third club they support is Chelsea to go along with Linfield and Rangers. Glory hunting *******s
I would rather forget about linking Liverpool with either as it does nothing but besmirch the good name of a great club

That's always been the case. They want Catholic teachers for Catholic kids. I'm not all together sure I see a problem with that.Originally posted by Sir Bob View Posti work in the education sector and it is virtually impossible for me to get a job in a Catholic school.
