Won't be top of the league by six... too early to say that.

We could have lost today. We didn't.

However I do feel that without Gerrard in tough games we lack something. Team selection dropped us two points today - I can't see anything wrong with that sentiment!

as has been mentioned here already, top of the league, unbeaten with a game in hand and we've played at one of the hardest away grounds there is, not a bad afternoon at all
You are right it is a fantastic afternoon
I feel crap for a reason.Reina makes a super save and that is a massive turning point and we should have made them suffer.

Are draws away at Upton Park and White Hart Lane etc etc going to be not bad afternoons too?
Oh the man is a midfield maestro
and his passes are sooo delightful

          I like it!

p.s - we really could/should have won that and in my opinion Rafa has to take some flak for not picking stevie and torres from the start, lets be fair rest the ****ers next week at home when our reserves could beat the brummies.

I'm normally an ardent Rafa supporter but he ****ed up today for me plain and simple, he was trying to be too clever in only playing those players who hadn't played 90 mins for their countries last week, and that's not how to pick a team, you need to pick players that will perform well together and thos players he picked today didn't.

Pompey away is one of the harder games we'll play all season, Torres and Gerrard should have played from the start maybe Babel, not sure why Kuyt didn't play but asuming he wasn't injured he should have played as well.

Sissoko needs to learn how to pass a ball, still undecided on Benayoun one game he looks great, the next he looks ****, Crouch shouldn't have been on the pitch as long as he was, and we didn't give the ball to Pennant anywhere near enough.

Rafa needs to start making changes earlier in matches, probably any other manager would have made a half time sub, probably crouch off and Torres on, but rafa perservered with the players he had and it was obvious the weren't going to score the way the game was going, instead he left it till 30 mins before the end as he always does, stupid decision imo. Only positivce i can draw is that at least we didn't get beat, however i think Rafa needs to start taking the league more seriously.

Appologise if that sounds like a rant, might change my opinion when i've sobered up a bit, midday drinking just isn't good for me

when did i say it was a fantastic afternoon? i regret comin on here after this game, i'd hate to think what'd happen if we'd have lost.

portsmouth are a strong side, defensively much sounder than both west ham and spurs, who i'd hope to beat away. as it stands a point is a good result against a portsmouth team who so far this season have been pretty solid. i'm sure we'll beat them at anfield this season, so the 4 points dropped last season will be 4 points earned.

Portsmouth are not an average team IMO. They are a very good team.

                James
                Distin
                Campell
                Muntari
                Diop
                Davis
                Utaka
                Kanu

They have power and energy in midfield and are strong at the back. Interesting to see them in january though when some african players go off. Also, we can't assume we would have scored if Gerrard and Torres had played from the start Gerrard has played two games with England in short space of time after getting back from an injury and Torres has played alot for us and Spain recently and is settling in a new league, might not have played well at Fratton Park.

Would have like three points obviously, but I'm not crying, clean sheet still regarding goals from open play.
                * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

i dont think they were there for the taking, they played well in the second half and i think they can feel more aggrieved at not taking their chances when they came.

the team we put out should have been good enough to beat portsmouth, regardless of gerrard/torres not starting. international breaks are difficult to deal with, if you think back to how we struggle after coming back from away champs league games, you can apply the same problems.

a draw wasnt the best result obviously, but it wasn't as bad as is being made out

Well i'm going to disagree with you, there were plenty of times we had opportunities to score or gave possesion away outside the oppositions box, better players i feel would have gotten us the win, Crouch for Torres and either Alonso or Sissoko for Gerrard from the start i think would have gotten us the win. It's definately a case of 2 points dropped, and i find it hard to put a positive spin on this one, we were top of the league, a win would have kept us there, and instead we get a draw in a game we could have and should have won

Torres is 22 and the season is a month old and he is as fresh as a daisy.Pompey must have been rubbing there hands looking at our teamsheet.
In a game where we need a goal we had 3players who have all scored already this year on the bench. What pissed me off most is the performance. It was shocking at times. If we had played nice football and were unlucky and had chances I would understand. They should have beat us and misses super chances.
