It's strange though, I've always defended the English academies and gone with the 'if they're good enough they'll make it' argument to counter those who think theres too many foreigners around but you never see headlines like 'Real Madrid swoop to sign English starlet'.

I think part of the reason is that in England professional contract is offered to young players at a very young age. This does not seem to be the case in other countries. I thought you could only sign as a professional once you turned 17 and that was the same in all countries?
