I think that says more about the strength in depth of the first team squad than anything else.

It's strange though, I've always defended the English academies and gone with the 'if they're good enough they'll make it' argument to counter those who think theres too many foreigners around but you never see headlines like 'Real Madrid swoop to sign English starlet'.

I think part of the reason is that in England professional contract is offered to young players at a very young age. This does not seem to be the case in other countries. So it is more feasible for English clubs to steal Spanish talent by offering higher wages than the other way.
