I said this back on Koptalk last year, twas the day before the Man Utd away game which we lost with a dismal performance when Kuyt was up top on his own for most of the match.

Now in my defence this was before we knew the scope of any investment and I did say at the time Rafa could go on to win us many more trophies, including the Champions League, which he almost did of course in the following May. I also said that if he went back to Spain he'd probably win the league there with Real.

I think Rafa has done a lot of great things for the club and I remain optimistic that we'll at least be up there this season. I just don't think he spent the money in the Summer in the right areas to turn us into genuine title winners.

I'd point to the wide areas in particular as I'm struggling to think of a single goal this season that's been created by either the left-mid or right-mid at the time. At least not one in open play. Against the crap teams you can get away with this but when you're playing quality or well-organised sides you need that bit extra and despite spending over 120M I just don't think we've got it down the flanks.

your talking about improving the flanks of our team, but with who? the standard you are seemingly setting is that of ronaldo, who im sorry to say is one of a kind mate.

Just playing devil's advocate a little bit. I disagree with him though.
Yes, but there are ways of saying that without coming out with jingoistic tripe such as:

"Being a foreigner, Rafa doesn't understand it's supposed to be Premier League first and Champions League second."

That kind of stuff is inexcusable xenophobia. He states it as a fact.

Nobody knows if Rafa will win the league for us or not, most of us on here think he will but to categorically state he won't as Fat Head has is a nonsense.

As is his argument that if Rafa hadn't won the CL he have been sacked by now. You could say that of any manager. If mourinho hadn't have won the league he'd be sacked, ditto Wenger etc. Its like if my aunty had balls she'd be my uncle. Rafa did win the CL so therefore despite a modest league record, has never been in the slightest danger of getting sacked.

Seen aldridge's reply? It's brilliant, someone should make him our PR officer

John Aldridge slams Sam Allardyce after Rafa Benitez attackSep 18 2007

                  By David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

ANFIELD legend John Aldridge jumped to the defence of Reds boss Rafael Benitez today, after Newcastle manager Sam Allardyce claimed he was “lucky to be still in a job.”

The outspoken Toon boss, who saw his side beaten 1-0 at Derby last night, claimed: “Rafa would be very lucky to be in a job if he hadn’t got to two Champions League finals, because they've had some very poor finishes in the Premier League.

“While they are a very good Champions League team, they’re not a Premier League winning side. They don’t have the mentality to win that yet.

“Being a foreigner, Rafa doesn’t understand it’s supposed to be Premier League first and Champions League second.”

His comments appeared in Zoo magazine, but Aldridge, who had a number of high profile run-ins with Allardyce during his time as Tranmere boss, the former Liverpool striker and he said today: “You ask Alex Ferguson how difficult it is to get to two Champions League finals. Should he be sacked?

“Rafa has done a marvellous job at Liverpool and had a massive task to overhaul a very poor squad when he first arrived.

“But there has been a lot of dead wood to clear out, which he has done, as well as winning the FA Cup and the Champions League along the way.

“Of course, Liverpool still have to win the Premier League, but Rafa will have at least another two or three years to try and achieve that.

“Sam should really focus on his own job. He knows the Press will highlight any comments and he shouldn’t put himself into that situation.

“But double standards is not something new for Sam. He claimed he was the first manager to introduce the lone striker system into this country, the formation which proved so successful for him at Bolton.

“In fact, I brought that system in at Tranmere and it took us to a League Cup final and two FA Cup quarter-finals, when we beat Bolton on the way.”

“Sam couldn’t come to terms with the system and he ended up adopting it himself, even to the extent of using Gareth Farrelly to take long throw-ins.”

In an amazing attack, the Newcastle manager predicted the title would not go to Anfield this season as their "foreigner" boss still does not have the right "mentality".

Liverpool were knocked off the top of the table at the weekend when Benitez rested Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres for the game at Portsmouth ahead of tonight's Champions League visit to Porto.

Allardyce admits the 2005 European champions have the best chance of the six British clubs of winning again this season.
