    We missed Alonso tonight

Week after week I come on here and see complaints about how Xabi doesn't do anything good anymore, he's useless, get rid as soon as possible etc...

Games like tonight really shows how much he does for us... He is an organiser, in both defence and attack. He is the on field Rafa, directs the team around the park (yes, even with his "sideways" passes). It's not just because of the game tonight, nearly every game that Xabi is not involved in, we just cannot control the middle of the park. His break up play is very underrated by some and his ability to organise our attack is what sets him apart from the other midfielders in the squad (this is not referring to Lucas as I have not seen enough of him to judge).

I think we have some unbelievable talent in our midfield at the moment. Momo is your all action destroyer, he doesn't hold the midfield, he is like a 10 year old kid that just chases the ball around everywhere, but he is mighty effective at it. Mascherano is your typical holding midfield player, and he is one of the best at it. Covers the back four better than most in world football at the moment, reminds me so much of Didi, but with pace. Gerrard is our star man, obviously. He is the one the team rely on to get them out of trouble, and he has delivered time after time. Xabi is your all round midfield player. Keeping the defence organised and tight. Nearly every play goes through him when on the park.

All four have their strengths and weaknesses, but I really think our best pairing is Gerrard and Alonso, and if fit, i think this will be the pairing in our next match. They have a great understanding of each others game, and as shown against villa and chelsea, they are really starting to click.

Notice that when Alonso doesn't play a game, he's either horribly missed because our passing game was ****e or he should be sold as soon as possible because Mascherano was having a blinder.

    There's never a middle ground.

No we didn't. He gives too much away with his Hollywood passes and is too slow. We missed Momo in the midfield, he would have kicked the crap out of all of the Portugese cheating ****

i agree that he was missed and i read somewhere that he made the most tackles in the prem 2 years ago so he gets thru alot of unseen graft, he has to play(when fit) especially in games like tonights where possession is vital, we were under the cosh alot cos we couldn't keep the ball.

Exactly. 2 years ago! He wouldn't have made the slightest bit of difference tonight. You'd only have seen him on camera if we'd won any free kicks....and then it would only be briefly whilst he knocked the ball tamely into the shins of the opposition wall.

Carheex, in the league he's won more tackles than anyone else for us in the last 3 years.

That said, I think tonight we just missed playing as a team more than anything.

We did miss him tonight. I like Xabi he comes in for alot of unfair stick but when he doesn't play we definitely miss him.

I think its a fair shout. We did lose possession a lot and I think the team with xabi in it may have retained the ball better.

Xabi has been, let's say not too great for quite some time now,he seems a shadow of the player we know & love lately, don't get me wrong no-one else is pulling up trees lately in the middle but Xabi's form is very worrying, for me at least,i think Momo is performing best.

                      Of course we missed Alonso.
Our central midfield got bossed by Porto, and they couldn't cope with their pressure on the ball. Ironic for an English team.

Momo and Xabi with Gerrard on the right would have sone the truck IMO. We needed extra protection against Quaresma which Pennant was clearly not up to. I think Rafa intended to play Mascher and Xabi in midfield and Gerrard on the right though, which would do the trick as well.

We had a bad night - never ever got going. And yes, we did miss Xabi's controlled passing in midfield.

Yep, there is no better match to show exactly what Chabbi does for the team. I know it goes unnoticed by a lot on here and those numpties won't even have contemplated that the fact Xabi was out contributed to our kick and rush performance but those of us who appreciate good football know exactly how big a difference Xabi would have made.

                              Good post.
