    set pieces and attack

ok on the plus side we seem to be doing ok at defending them..

but what to **** are we doing at corners and set plays where we get the big men into the box only to blast one into the wall or blaze over the bar??

i know we got one against porto and gerrrards against villa was special.

but other than that i feel as though we lack ideas or maybe even confidence??
im sure we practice in training so:

    1. do we place more emphasis on defending set pieces than scoring in training ??

    2. how much work goes into shooting at training ??

    3. breaking away at speed and trying to get behind a defence ??

    4. maybe its just me but by times we look to have no ideas going forward, is this due to lack of practice in training or by constant rotation its hard for players to get used to other players movement around them ??

for me an inswinging corner or free kick where any touch at all may result in a goal has to be better than an outswinging one, have always said it.

i hate to say it and it breaks my heart but watching the way arsenal are breaking forward and scoring is a pleasure to watch at the minute and i just wish we could play some attacking football like this...

anyways, set pieces - breaking forward - training: DISCUSS ??
"Sky and Setanta have the right to choose their games and it will be the same for everyone. So Mr Ferguson will not be complaining about fixtures and a campaign against United.

"Or there is another option. That Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple."

One thing that's going to improve our set pieces and free kicks no end is Fabio Aurelio, his corners are nearly always pin perfect and he's got a great fee kick in him, that should solve our left sided problems. As for who should take on the right sided duties, Gerrard is okay with the free kicks but his corners are woeful never beats the first man, i think i'd like to see Finnan get a go.

We obviously work on different tricks ala Agger v Chelsea last season, I just think it's the service thats the problem so hopefully this will improve, also Leto looks to be able to take a good corner, but again thats the left side.

I think it would be pretty awesome and supernatural (not to mention extra-terrestrial or even divine) if we practiced corner-kicks in training from time to time! We seem to have a lot of corner-kicks per game this season, but we don't take advantage of them. Hell, we can't even cross the ball inside the penalty box!

United or Chelsea would score at least a goal per game from corner-kicks if they had as many as we have. We? Absolutely woeful! All we do is an overhit cross or a bad cross or a short pass to the nearest red shirt. WE ARE **** WITH CORNER-KICKS (and that goes for all set-pieces as well). I can't wait for the return of Aurelio. At least he hits a target from set-pieces sometimes

i agree it is worrying how poor we are set pieces etc...yesterday Babel tried a few corners and couldn't even get the ball above 6 foot in the air..I think its fairly obvious we don't practise them enough.

Those Babel corner-kicks were terrible! 2 in a row Pennant's crosses are too high and without any real power and speed, while Gerrard is just not a set-piecer at all.

that was my point do we spend too much time learning to defend in training with not enough emphasis on scoring ???

I agree, especially on how good we are at defending them.

I get annoyed when everytime we play on Sky someone mentions our zonal system and says it's controversial. They say how we should man mark as the system is too dangerous.

They neglect to mention how few goals we concede using it though!

Exactly As they appear to be the best crossers of the ball in our squad anyway

In Rafas first season whenever we got a corner the commentator would mention the zonal marking. Then, when we did concede from a corner, all the blame was on Rafas zonal tactics.

Which is why we could do worse than having Finnan on the right of midfield (where he plays for Ireland I think?). He's got a better delivery than Pennant, contributes more defensively, plus he used to be a right midfielder when he was younger.

That way we can have Arbeloa as RB, with Riise/Another at LB. Or play three CB's with wing backs (Finnan & Aurelio).

                        Ok... am getting carried away!

Under Rafa, ive never seen us implement a rehearsed and practised set play, bar perhaps the Agger goal in the CL semi.
I honestly dont think we have any.

                              That's very true.

In fairness however, I dont ever recall doing anything like that under Houllier, or even Evans... might be wrong though as me memory isn't the best!!
