    Goals from open play

    I have a question.

Does a goal resulting from a corner count as a goal from open play?

The sky commentator the other night repeatedly said that these were the first goals to go in during open play against Liverpool this season.

    Please tell me I'm right!

It counts as a goal from a set-piece rather than open play in my mind

Set-piece - same as if a free kick is headed in .

I always thought that goals from open play was everything except those scored from penalties. It does make sense that set pieces arent open play tho.

I'd consider it to be goals scored from all set pieces

            I thought the same.

But as you say, I suppose technically a goal from a free kick or a corner really isn't open play.

With a penalty you stand the greatest chance of scoring - it's a gimme essentially as long as the taker is competant.

With a free kick/corner the probability of scoring is reduced due to more bodies being in the box - this is similar to a goal from normal play.

As such, I'd say the latter is open play.

In addition, the majority of Andy Johnson's goals are usually penalties. No-one differentiates if its a goal from a freekick or a header in from a corner.

Penalties, freekicks and corners are set pieces, not open play.
Do think in the top goal scorer lists the number of penalties should be in brackets.

                    Definitely true.

I think the grey area comes when you consider how many touches after a free kick or corner into the box it is before open play resumes.

Open play is anything OTHER than a penalty

The reason a penalty is not open play is because it is a one on one with the keeper. The rest of the opposition are not allowed to defend it.

By the way Reading did not score from a corner

I don't think that is true, any situation in which the opposition are constrained to move 10 yards away from the ball (and obviously can't challenge for it) can't be considered open play IMO.

Whether anything other than the single kick of a corner or freekick can be classed as not open play seems up for debate. The more I think about it the more I prefer a category of 'from set piece' for this and to declare this a sub division of open play.

correct - I've started a refereeing course and that's something I actually know
