    Ouch - Injuries

    Here's an interesting fact :

"Statistically, an individual player sustains one or two minor injuries a season and can expect a major injury every third season,"
Professor Jan Ekstrand, vice-chairman of Uefa's medical committee.

and statistically the higher the level of football the greater the chance of injury:

Prof Ekstrand found that a player was six to eight times' more likely to be injured in a Champions League match than in training

Some years we suffer what seems like a bad spate of injuries and it knocks our season off track but if the frequency of injuries is known then we can develop a squad size and depth that mitigates against this.

Our squad seems better able to adapt to this reality than all other teams except probably Chelsea. Good news.

Long gone are the days when Liverpool reacted to Kenny Dalglish complaining of a groin strain by simply telling a seamstress to tighten the striker's jockstrap with a needle and thread.

Weak ankles!! I had the same problem (came from breaking my left ankle at football summer camp when 8) and now wear a brace support on my left foot - which means I can no longer do my Traore impression. Makes a really cool sound when someone clatters into me though . .

I hurt my left ankle playing fives about 18 months ago, I had about 4 weeks off from playing and then came back, too soon as it happens, as I got a kick in the same spot, it hurt like hell and has never been the same since. I'm left footed and if I wear an ankle support, I can't seem to kick the ball correctly! (I **** you not!)

So every time I play it's a trade off - do I wear the support to protect the ankle, but cannot do the things with the ball that I want to, or do I sack the protection, giving me the ability to strike the ball, but always concerned that the ankle might go at some point....

Yeah, my right ankle is made of glass I think - I sprained it in a friendly last summer, then done it again 3 months later. Started woring ankle supports and they have helped but still done it three times since, tho not as bad as before as probably had some extra support.

I had a similar dilemma but after the third time I had to be lifted on the team bus I was told that I play with the support brace or bugger off!!

Stick with it He-Man - it gets better after a few years . . .

Every footballer has a few ankle injuries - it's a given.

It's obvious though make sure you wear decent shoes. All these fancy coloured shoes are pish, and should be avoided at all costs. If only for the fact they make you a target for the likes of me!

Recovered from the last sprain in about two weeks which i thought was great.

                  Obviously a very mild sprain.....

Coloured boots are a big no-no.

Black is the only way to go.

I've had enough of 'em to know it wasn't the worst, but all the same i couldn't stand on it for three days and then all of a sudden i'm playing football in two weeks.

I could still feel it, but i'm hard

Nice boots. I'm on predator pulses (cos I fancy myself a bit of a dead ball specialist) although I'd prefer a stiffer sole.

The best boot I've ever had were made by Patrick- ace they were (black with a green 'P' on the back) snug and strong.

I had a pair of Patrick boots once. Utterly wasted on me they were.

I used to sprain my ankle regularly. Then my doctor gave me an exercise to do for two weeks and I didn't do it again (although i'm retired now due to a long-term hip injury).

Give me five stars and I'll tell you the exercise.
                            .
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

May the Lord bless this post.

The standing on one leg with your eyes closed?
                              or
The one where you get some rubber, wrap it around your foot, and then do some resistance stretching of your ankle?
                              or
standing on the edge of a step, doing calf raises?

You only need 1 of them, but all 3 work great.

I received Grade 2 tears to all 3 ligaments in my ankle in 04. Was out for 6 weeks, and then went to Euro for another 6.
Came back and have never had a problem.

Most people just come back to soon - they wait till they have no pain and leave it at that, without strengthening the ankle sufficiently.
As a result, they damage the joint, and the cartilige... meaning ongoing pain and swelling for life.
That or some people just damage their ligaments so many times, they just dont stretch anymore, much like elastic in your old undies. When that happens it reco time.
