Rick Parry:Ticket Prices At New Stadium

Liverpool fans have been assured that the club's American owners will not hike up ticket prices to service debts and pay for their new stadium.

Anfield chief executive Rick Parry insists that while George Gillett and Tom Hicks are looking to borrow up to £500m to both finance the 60,000-capacity development of a new home at Stanley Park and consolidate the £298m they originally borrowed to buy Liverpool last year, the costs will not be passed on to supporters through increases in admission charges.

Parry said: "There is no need for fans to be concerned about ticket prices being hiked up.

"The business model that we have will work without increasing the cost of watching the team - if we build a team that is successful on the pitch and fills the stadium.

"Our owners are smart enough to know that if you get the pricing policy wrong then you won't fill the stadium. They know that the great strength of this club is our supporter base and that you can't lose touch with those roots.

"Pricing fans out of the stadium just doesn't make business sense or emotional sense.

Fans had become concerned that Gillett and Hicks would be forced to follow the lead of Malcolm Glazer at Manchester United by pricing loyal fans out of Anfield because of unstable interest rates.

Parry added: "Remember, their first commitment to the new stadium was to build a new Kop and that it had to be the centrepiece and the heartbeat of our ground.

"I think their track record in understanding what this club is about and the realationship we have with the fans, is pretty good.

I don't think rising interest rates will affect ticket prices because we have owners with huge financial muscle, while it was always the case that the new stadium would be financed through debt."

Liverpool resume their Champions League campaign with the visit of Marseille on Wednesday night with the controversy over manager Rafa Benitez's transfer policy continuing to rage.

But Parry says Benitez will be allowed to do it his way - as is the tradition at Anfield - and insists that unlike other Premier League clubs, the prospect of forcing a player on to the manager is anathema to Liverpool.

"I can never imagine the day when Liverpool would attempt to force a player on the manager," said Parry.

Manager Benitez, meanwhile, has told the Premier League to give Avram Grant the respect he deserves by allowing him to continue as Chelsea boss.

But Benitez said: "My belief is that if you have been coaching and training for years with both club sides and international sides then you will have enough experience.

"It is important for new managers to have the paperwork but if you have been working for years already then I don't think it is a problem."

What controversy has Rafa's transfer policy caused, IMO he's very shrewed in the transfer market and when he makes a mistake he moves the player on sharpish like!

There will be a certain level of increase, a small percentage and this will continue to happen.

Its hardly inflationary though, i think £36 for a group game is a little excessive, but if they dont increase for the semi's amd quarters etc then its ok. But by the time the new stadium is finally built we will be in the forties for tickets by then anyway so the increase will already be in place.

Yeah the CL games never used to full Cat A prices last season. Be interesting to see how much the League Cup game is.

                Yeah but that's normal.

They probably wont have a big hike or 'you MUST buy cup games too' for STH.

Which has been the problem for united. Small increases happen at all the big clubs.

Im not moaning like as i dont have to go, but the point is they will not put the prices up as the stadium opens as it would be bad PR, they will just steadily increase them before its built. Until a few years ago ourselves and the mancs had some of the lowest ticket prices but that aint the case anymore

Which is ridiculous really given how many people are scrambling every week for such a limited supply of tickets.

So youre saying they should bump the prices up?

I'm saying they probably could without losing any punters.
