Ive said it for ages, Alonso doesnt play the way he can when he plays with Stevie, Alonso just sits there short passes doesnt stamp his authority on the game, no longer do we see the 40 yard pin pointing passing that made Xabi the best passer in the Prem if not the world. When you feel like you're done, you are not alone........

Without having read the vast bulk of this thread - I have to take my hat off to JohnnyH for raising this taboo option. Good stuff.Originally posted by Johnny H View PostThis does raise the question - do we need Steven Gerrard?
When fit, I would prefer Alonso alongside Mascherano.
Alonso comes out of his shell when Gerrard isn't around, Masch is supreme in the 'Hamann' role.
Rather than stick Gerrard out wide right which he clearly dislikes, could it be that the time has come to sell him to the highest bidder?
The funds raised could overhall one or two other problem positions, wide left/left back/second striker, even wide right if Pennant decides he's lost interest.
Gerrard may be a problem wrt the balance of this team. Undoubtedly a great player but he needs a focus (position) to channel his talents. Could he even work as an out-and-out second striker? Not just behind Torres but alongside?
Good man JohnnyH
Frank.Francis.

And when I say 'play Gerrard on the left', I mean on the left
A defensive mid for £18m?

I really doubt that. Steven Gerrard needs to be unleashed on the opposite defence without wondering whether the person sitting behind him can actually protect that back four. Xabi is a fantastic playmaker in his own right and can play instead of Gerrard but not with him. As balague said alonso plays deep but that does not mean that he is a defensive midfielder.Originally posted by Pacman View PostThe simple fact is that Gerrard misses Xabi.
People should also remember that Gerrard is a human being. After being involved in an accident with a child, im not really surprised that his mind was not on the game last night.

Having seen Benitez' work first hand in spain i knew immediately that he would begin to curtail gerrard's influence on the team. For 3 or so seasons him and owen basically carried us but Benitez believes in systems and not individuals. Gerrard dominated every aspect of our play and was owen's main supply line for goals. It was becoming the owen and gerrard show every week.Originally posted by Johnny H View PostThis does raise the question - do we need Steven Gerrard?

Hence the purchase of Alonso. He was bought as a REPLACEMENT for gerrard who benitez was led to believe was on the verge of joining chelsea. When this did not happen he was left with 2 first choice playmakers. I still believe that Benitez would not be unhappy if Gerrard left.
I believe he has to stay as he is a complete one off. A player who can do everything. The complete midfield player and one of the best players to ever play for liverpool.[B]Sir Isaac Newton knew the universal law of karma - any action has its equal and opposite reaction.[B]

Yes, I don't think it would be particularly distracting.Originally posted by el matador View Post

Far too long to read! But I managed to get the point the guy does not like Stevie at all! He is very harsh upon the lad, especially re: Olympaikos, SG himself admitted after the match he'd played ****. As for the the CL final, man, the tactics were wrong, but once Rafa adjusted it Gerrard was able to take the game by the scruff of the neck almost straight away.
But as was mentioned earlier today, some people just like to moan and see the worst in players, regardless of what the player does, esp when the chips are down.
