    Set Pieces

Why are we so bad at them? (I mean offensive set pieces not defensive)

I mean we have quite a tall squad but it seems the only player that attacks the ball with any real purpose is Hyypia. You would have thought with Crouchy height he would score the odd goal from a corner but he never seems to be near the ball once delivered.

Surely this is somthing we can work on and get 5-10 goals a season from.

Also why do we have all 11 players back when defending corners surely we can leave 1 or 2 players forward to counter attack??

Ace question. It seems we have no plan other than throwing the ball in the box. I never understood why we are so horrible at setpieces.

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.

question is, is the movement in the box to blame or is it only the delivery? apart from aurelio we don't seem to have a decent corner taker

Roma left 3 men up at OT this weeks when Utd had a corner. Utd have won games against Everton and Sunderland this season with goals from corners.

Whats that got to do with Roma leaving 3 men up on Tuesday?

Off the top of my head I can think of 4 goals we've already scored this season from set-pieces (Gerrard v Villa, Alonso v Derby, Hyppia v Toulouse and Kuyt v Porto), although admittedly only one of those was from a corner.

We do seem to have occasional bursts of invention from free-kicks, typified by Agger's goal in the semi v Chelsea, but too often seem to end up relying on Riise bludgeoning a hole through the wall's collective shin pads.

Historically, we've always been fairly woeful at corners. In fact, I remember thinking some time around 1983 that this was actually a deliberate policy, as though scoring from a corner was somehow less noble, more reliant on brute force and dumb luck than true genius, more, if you will, 'Everton'. Right now, I'd be happy to see one bounce in off Carra's arse if it meant 3 points.

I don't know why they never seem to look for a near-post flick-on, as it always seems to me that it's nigh on imossible to defend against if executed correctly. We tried a few years ago, as I recall, with Gerrard scoring against Tranmere from just such a routine. Suppose we haven't got a Gary Mac these days to put the ball in the right place (although let's face it, how difficult can it be to aim for a fairly broad area, just in advance of the front post?).

I thought the best corner we have delivered in years came on wed night, and was delivered by the crow...other than that. every corner never seems to get past the first defender.

Also it infuriates me that we never leave at least 1 person up on defending a corner. We clear the ball only for it to land to an opposition player to deliver back into the box un hassled
Just look at the face: it's vacant, with a hint of sadness. Like a drunk who's lost a bet.

Apart from the goal against villa, gerrard is useless at corners and freekicks. he should never take a corner as he's the best at attacking the ball. we obviously NEVER practise corners EVER.

Hyypia is our only excellent player in the air and he don't play that much.

Crouch is very overrated in the air, I wouldn't say that he is rubbish but not far from it. I have lost count on how many sitters in the six yard box that he has missed.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Was Crouch rated in the air? More like his over rated for his 'touch' Bunch of ****e if you ask me. The guy is more than half a foot taller than his defenders yet he gets beaten in the air. Theres a thing called jumping you lanky crap!

Because Gerrard takes the majority of them.

When Rafa first came to LFC, I remember very clearly that we used to try lots of little tricks, feints, clever off the ball decoy runs, combination passes etc when we had free kicks. Nowadays we just get alonso blasting it lamely into the knees of the wall! Where's the imagination and creativity gone??

I think its more the delivery, Fabio and Xabi aside, no one is accurate or god enough to be a regular set piece taker.]
