There are some good strikers from/in the dutch league, players like Van Basten, RvN, Makaay, Huntelaar, Larsson, Zlatan and so on. Everyone of them isn't crap.

Afonso Alves would improve our team. We need someone to put the ball into the back of the net. Alves has scored more than one goal a game since he joined Herenveen. I don't think you will find anyone in the european pro leagues that can match that the last year.Just believe and you never know what will happen.
According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Sorry, I don't agree. He's a journeyman donkey who used to play for MalmoOriginally posted by AFII View PostAfonso Alves would improve our team. We can't afford to risk another season on these nobodies, Rafa needs to show some ambition, put in a bid for Villa, Chiellini and Quaresma

Just because he has played in Sweden don't make him a bad player. Larsson and Zlatan played in Sweden.Originally posted by Red Chilli View PostSorry, I don't agree. He's a journeyman donkey who used to play for Malmo

I would say that we have a better central defender in the Swedish league than Chiellini. Ragnar Sigurdsson has been outstanding this season, the best defender in the Swedish league by a mile.
Roma want him and a few English PL clubs are also interested.Just believe and you never know what will happen.

We're never going to agree on this one. Basically Rafa's squad building days are over, it's time to buy some first teamers now.Originally posted by AFII View PostJust because he has played in Sweden don't make him a bad player. Larsson and Zlatan played in Sweden.

We need players who are already accustomed to playing at the highest level and that excludes leagues like France, Sweden and Holland (no offense)

At least it looks like Rafa knows exactly which positions we need to strengthen. Left back, left wing, right wing and another goal scoring striker. I'm only surprised that we have not been linked with a central defender yet.Just believe and you never know what will happen.

He is a set piece specialistOriginally posted by Red_Polo View PostCould someone who's seen him play a lot give us a quick run down of Alves' strengths and weaknesses? TIA

Not that fast but not that slow either
Good in the air
Good in the box
Can get past his man
Skillful but not super skillful
Hits the target very often
Don't work that hard for the teamJust believe and you never know what will happen.

The Heerenveen game was on Setanta tonight and the Heracles defence was a shambles. I have genuinely seen better defending in schoolboy football. Most of Alves's goals were because some of the back four pushed forward to play him offside but forgot to let their colleagues know who played him onside!
Scoring a hatful of goals in the Eredivisie does not guarantee you goals in the Premier League. Ask Mateja Kežman. Or Dirk Kuijt...
There is a light that never goes out. RIP Alan "Mally" Johnston and the 96. YNWA.
