Take the spurs game for example. Was he at fault in any way for their two goals. No. They were 2 long balls which our defence should have coped with but didn't. Who was our most potent attacking player, SG. His free kick led to the goal and another hit the post.

Sure he's not at his best at the moment but to suggest he plays wide right is wrong. not only that the author of the original piece obviously doesn't watch us much. He calls for alonso & Masher to play CM. Now I like Alonso but he hasn't been at his best for 18 mths in my view.
      Agreed

Gerrard is the best central midfielder in the league but somehow he has become a scapegoat for the lack of team form, with suggestions he is sold off.

It amazes me how quickly the fans turn on players. It's a bit like kids football on here sometimes. Someone kicks the ball up one end of the pitch and the whole lot chase after it.

Alonso's best position is as a central midfielder and not a holding midfielder.

We have the best holding midfielder in the world in Mascherano, he should play there week in week out.

Alonso is one of the best CENTRAL MIDFIELDERS in the world, give him the chance in that position and he will play better.

So that leaves Rafa to play with either a five man midfield or move Stevie to the right.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

In all seriousness though i kind of agree with him, i wouldnt say he was the culprit for a lack of form but i wouldnt say he was a right midfielder either, he doesnt have the skill to be one or the discipline to stay on they wing.
I couldnt see him one on one with a full back and beating them, he is strong running with the ball but not at dribbling.
I dont know where i would play gerrard, i prefer Alonso and Maschareno in the middle because players in the centre seem to play better when gerrard isnt there (Alonso Maschareno Sissoko and even Biscan) I dont know why, maybe his swashbuckeling style doesnt suit them or his lack of disclipline, whatever the reson is.

          --------------Alonso---------Maschareno----------------

          -----------Gerrard----------------------------Riise/??------

          -------------------Torres---Voronin-------------------

I would play gerrard inside right and get an attacking full back such as Alves (i dont know of any other ones) And seems as people are going on about his performance at right back they can onterchange and cover each other.

Or go for a Man U type formation

          -------------------------------Maschareno------------------------------

          ----------------Gerrard--------------------------Alonso------------------

          --------------Vornonin-----------Torres---------------Babel---------------

Where the top 4 can interchange

That last one looks a very possible formation. Alves and Aureilio would be great as our attacking fullbacks

Alonso and Mascherano at CM in a 4-4-2. They should offer 5 maybe 6 goals a season between them in the PL.

It's complete wank to even think that could be an option. If Gerrard aint it then we need a new advanced CM. Alonso is not the answer. That is the sad truth.

i thought he was woeful and hiding against spurs personally. maybe not the reason we lost, but he was never going to be the reason why we won it either. a poor poor display.

he's awesome at his best though. i still see him as centre mid but its true that with masher he now has competition. he can't see himself as an automatic choice and has to perform to justify himself like everyone else.

the alonso point is well made in my view too. he has been off form for a while himself. but at the same time, he does get his foot on the ball even so, and i really think we need someone who can do that in the side.

Agreed and we had our best run in the league in 05/06 with Alonso and Stevie central and our best run last year the same.

You're talking horse**** as usual. Xabi has played as the advanced midfielder twice the season and has two goals. More even than SG.

The reason Xabi does not score many goals is that he is camped in his half most of the time. If he is allowed to roam into forward position he will get atleast 10 goals per season. Xabi's shot technique is just too good not to score goals.

Gerrard just behind the strikers or as a "defensive forward". And Hyypia with Torres leading the attack!

Alonso is not a goalscorer. He won't clock in nearly enough goals as an advanced CM.

Speedy you I love you you little ****. You can't keep throwing a 6-0 game in my face. Yes, Alonso scored twice. I especially loved the first where he hammered a freekick into the corner. Like Riise in 2001 against united.

To say that Alonso has played CM twice in his LFC career is simply a falsum. He has had several games as an advanced CM since he arrived in 2004. He is NOT a goalscorer.

Doesn't really matter. It will never happen on a regular basis and you can take that to the bank (Northern Rock)

                              Could. Not. Agree. More.
