Fernando Torres begins race to make derby debut

      Oct 15 2007

by Ian Doyle, Liverpool Daily Post

Fernando Torres rues a missed chance

FERNANDO TORRES will today begin his race against time to be fit for Saturday’s derby at Goodison Park.

The Liverpool striker returned to Merseyside yesterday and will this morning begin a course of intensive treatment after suffering a muscle tear in his right leg during training with Spain on Friday.

Spain’s team doctor Genaro Borras declared Torres would be sidelined for “eight to 10 days” after the 23-year-old missing his country’s 3-1 Euro 2008 qualifying win in Denmark on Saturday and ruled out of Spain’s friendly in Finland on Wednesday.

But despite the diagnosis, Torres has not given up hope of being available for the trip to Everton at the weekend and is desperate for his first experience of a Merseyside derby.

And with Dirk Kuyt already struggling with a hamstring strain, Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez will give Torres every chance to prove his fitness before Saturday.

The Anfield outfit will be aiming to kick-start a spluttering campaign with Benitez revealing his squad’s “frustration” at their inability to build on their best start to a Premier League season during his reign.

Having prompted talk of a genuine championship challenge by rocketing to the top of the league in the opening weeks, a series of under-whelming performances mean Liverpool have now dropped to fourth, already six points behind leaders Arsenal.

Benitez’s men had to rely on a last-minute equaliser from Torres to ensure their unbeaten league start remained intact by scraping a 2-2 draw at home to Tottenham Hotspur in their last outing eight days ago.

And while insistent his much-criticised team have started the season well, the Liverpool manager acknowledges his team must now kick on again.

“Because we had started really well people were thinking perhaps this could be our year,” said Benitez.

“Then we lost some points and then people thought, maybe not.

“I think there is frustration around the team.

“Sometimes you don’t know if it’s better to start really well or a little bit slower and continue progressing.

“I think we are in a good position at the moment but it’s true that we need to improve.

“It’s important we have kept the unbeaten run going. It really was a little disappointing after the Tottenham game because we conceded two goals, two big mistakes, but we continue unbeaten and that’s important.

“I think we are in a better position than last year. That is important. If we continue to be close to the top of the table, in two or three months and continue to change players I think we will be capable of doing something at the end of the season.”

With most of his squad on national team duty, Benitez will be keeping his fingers crossed that Liverpool suffer no further injury concerns during the second round of international games on Wednesday.

“Some players are playing games for us and also for the national teams, it’s not easy to go, come back, and be ready,” added the Spaniard. “Especially because we have some early kick-offs on Saturdays.

“You need two or three players playing well and then these key players can help with the rest of the team. We have had some injuries and some players are not playing at their level; that is the reason the team is not playing at their level.”

Meanwhile, Liverpool have confirmed the departure of Pako Ayesteran from his position as assistant manager.

Ayesteran has been on gardening leave since an irrevocable breakdown in his relationship with Benitez in late August.

However, with Liverpool mindful of Ayesteran’s intimate knowledge with working practices at Anfield, the Spaniard will remain contracted at the club until June 30 next year.

Chief executive Rick Parry said: “Following discussions between Rafael Benitez and Pako Ayestaran, it has been agreed that it would be in the best interests of all parties if Pako leaves his post as assistant manager.

“Pako, however, will remain under contract to us until next summer.

“The club want to thank Pako for his hard work and contribution to our success over the past three years.”
      Fingers crossed for El Nino

Fernando Torres will undergo intensive treatment at Melwood this week in a bid to be fit for Saturday's Merseyside derby.
The Spanish striker missed his country's Euro 2008 qualifier in Denmark over the weekend with a thigh problem and is now back in Liverpool working with the Reds' medical team.

"Fernando was assessed by the club's medical staff this morning and underwent a scan which confirmed an adductor injury," said club spokesman Ian Cotton.

So there's a hope that he might make it! I wouldn't want to risk him unless he was 100%, mind!

He has to play IMO, this is a huge game and we need pace up front.

I'd be amazed if Rafa considers Babel as a striker, so torres is our only pacey forward.

Fernando Torres injury may not be as bad as first feared

Oct 15 2007 by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL have eased fears that Fernando Torres could miss the most crucial week of their season so far.

The Reds striker tore a thigh muscle in training with Spain on Friday, and missed their 3-1 win in Denmark the next day.

Spanish physio Genaro Borras initially cited his recovery period as “eight to 10 days,” but Melwood staff are hopeful he will be available for a week which includes a Merseyside derby, a crucial Champions League clash in Istanbul and then the visit of title rivals Arsenal to Anfield.

Torres’ injury was analysed this morning and the player will begin a period of intensive treatment.

With fellow striker Dirk Kuyt also receiving treatment for a minor hamstring strain, Torres’ injury is a headache Benitez could do without.

Ryan Babel, meanwhile, will be hoping to win over Dutch coach Marco van Basten this week after missing Saturday’s defeat by Romania because he overslept.

The Reds winger was left out of the starting line-up as a punishment, after twice missing team meetings.

Van Basten explained: “It was the second time that Babel overslept on a match day. That should never happen.

“That’s why I left him out of the team. Robben trained hard and he is fit, so he played instead. It is very well possible that Babel feels disappointed. It is also not my style to handle these kinds of things this way. But we also expect that players obey rules during a match.

“The first time that he arrived too late, he settled the matter with a joke.

“The second time he joined us too late for the meal and that was a bit too much. He has to appear on time, just like all the others.”

Babel, 20, came into the match in the 78th minute as substitute for Robben but could not prevent the Dutch from losing 1-0 to Romania in a clash between the two Group G leaders.

The Reds, meanwhile, have confirmed assistant manager Pako Ayesteran’s departure from the club, but effectively ensured he cannot work for any of their rivals by keeping him under contract until next June.

A statement issued by chief executive Rick Parry said: “Following discussions between Rafael Benitez and Pako Ayestaran, it has been agreed that it would be in the best interests of all parties if Pako leaves his post as assistant manager. Pako, however, will remain under contract to us until next summer.

“The club thank Pako for his hard work and contribution to our success over the past three years.”

                            Yep, pointless otherwise.

We paid the price last year there for playing people who werent fit.

We should only play Torres if he is 100% fit IMO. We can't risk losing him for longer.
