We could never know what Rafa had in mind. Yes, I was surprised he took off Stevie, but man, Lucas should have scored and won us the penalty.
For that alone, we should give Rafa the benefit of the doubt, as FACTS speak for him.

I actually posted in the match thread that Gerrard should have been taken off at half time......it was a typo though, I meant Sissoko.Originally posted by DJS View PostHehe...easy to say that after hearing what Rafa said.
But let's be honest, looking at how the situation was shaping up, how many of us were sitting there thinking "Oh i know...we need to take off Gerrard" ?
None of us, i bet.

Rafa did make a mistake starting with SG, JM & MS in midfield. Sissoko had a bad game. Pennant should have started on the right to give us some width.
Having said that, sending Leiva on was a masterstroke in my opinion.
His shot was handled by Neville which meant a peno for us and the winning goal by Kuyt.
In addition, we have a very big match v Besiktas on Wednesday so RAFA wanted to give Gerrard a bit of a rest.
Rafa gambled today and it paid off and for that he should be commended not criticized.

Lawrenson:"Well thats 3 good chances they have had in the first 3 minutes of this half"
Motson:"" Yes Mark, you could almost say that they have had 3 chances in as many minutes"
Lawrenson: Errr I thought I just did say that, John"

Gerrard didn't play any good but he was an attacking threat. I wouldn't have cared if Rafa had taken off Stevie 2-1 up but to sub Stevie and keep two defensive minded midfielders against ten players at 1-1 is just crazy in a must win game.
Momo should have gone first and then Gerrard.
Gerrard will always be a bigger attacking threat than Momo and we needed to score and not keep it tight at the back.Just believe and you never know what will happen.
According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Immaterial. If it was Riley in-charge it would have been a dead cert peno for the fooking bitters.Originally posted by Tom View PostObviously taking gerrard off was the right thing to do. Our passing and link-up play was better, lucas caused the winning pen. Rafa was proved right.
Btw. just got a text off my mate, right behind the goal, lescott leaned into carra and then threw himself on the ground. It wasn't a pen at the end.
