why cant there be a choice as in the ref asks the offending team do they want the man sent off and a pen or award the goal and he gets a yellow there and then and also refer him to the disciplinary panel to see if further punishment is warranted.

I'd feel gutted, but that's the way the cookie crumbles I'm afraid. There's no doubt about it IMHO, a goal can only be a goal if the ball crosses the line.
