Liverpool stadium costs rise to £400m

THE cost of Liverpool FC’s new stadium on Stanley Park has risen steeply, it was revealed last night.

Tom Hicks, one of the club’s new American owners, has disclosed that the cost of the new stadium – due to open in August, 2011 – will now be at least £400m.

This is £100m more than the previous figure for the project, which is due to go before a special sitting of the city council’s planning committee next month for final approval.

Hicks and fellow American George Gillett took over Liverpool in March and have since revamped the club’s plans for a new stadium.

Hicks, who was attending a global sports industry forum in London ahead of Sunday’s NFL game between the New York Giants and the Miami Dolphins, admitted the projected cost had risen to “at least £400m.”

But he added: “I'm so excited about the new stadium because we'll be able to go do things for the fans we’ve never been able to do for them.”

The stadium will have a capacity of 60,000 – 15,000 more than Anfield – when it opens but that could increase to 75,000 in the future.

Hicks said: “Our fans are wonderful and over time we’ll be able to give them the amenities, comfort and ease of getting tickets they’ve never had before.”

He said neither he nor Gillett had any intention of cashing in on any future revenues at Anfield.

“People get involved in sport mainly because they have a passion rather than for the money,” he said. “There are far better investments I could make than buying a football team.”

US-based architects and planners are currently working alongside British design teams and the city council’s planning department on the scheme.

The move comes just weeks after the final slice of public funding for the Stanley Park project was agreed by the board of the Northwest Regional Development Agency. The board agreed to award £9.3m to add to the £9m already given from the European Objective 1 fund.

The cash will go towards refurbishing Stanley Park and building a new community partnership centre alongside the new ground. It is hoped the improvement scheme will give historic Stanley Park its biggest-ever facelift.

So public money is now down to about 4.5% of the total cost - hardly worth the aggravation its caused the club

The fact that it's not just the stadium but also the regeneration of the area around the stadium, park, community centre etc.

Sly blackmail really, we will let you build a stadium if...

The total public funds is measly, very measly, but hey every little helps...Sorry wrong stadium
        We come not to play.

          New Anfield stadium costs soar

The projected cost of building Liverpool Football Club's new stadium has rocketed to "at least £400m".

The news of the £150m hike comes from the club's co-owner Tom Hicks, who together with fellow American George Gillett took over the club in March.

The Stanley Park stadium will have a capacity of 60,000 - 15,000 more than Anfield - when it opens, but that could increase to 75,000 in the future.

Plans go before planners at the city council on 5 November.

Mr Hicks said he was not worried about the radically revised figures: "I'm so excited about the new stadium because we'll be able to go do things for the fans we've never been able to do for them.

"Our fans are wonderful and over time we'll be able to give them the amenities, comfort and ease of getting tickets they have never had before."

Somone just post something when they start building the damn thing.
I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

Yes I do. Gain the necessary approval elsewhere if necessary - tell these f*cking jobsworths to give us the approval or f*ck off. Other areas would kill to have us there. 60,000 for a club of our stature is just sh*te.

You have to get these huge stadiums absolutely right or the atmosphere goes. Look at the Emirates. I would stick with a smaller stadium for a while and get it right then build on when the price is right and the dynamics have been sorted out.

we'll get the approval but it'll take a while for the train station to get sorted, and the tram system will help us as well if that gets the go ahead. We are being treated shoddily by the council but if we want to stay in the city (and the vast majority do) then it's what we've got to put up with to get it built. Hopefully come 2011/2012 - we'll have our new stadium with nearly 80k seats, hopefully at that stage the biggest prem ground in the country, we'll have brand new facilities, a great transport system to the ground, and the blue****e will be out in kirkby somewhere

You would think with Everton moving that the Counil would want LFC to remain close to the city and would be doing as much as they could to ensure thats going to happen. This new stadium nd related development will surely create a lot of new long term jobs and revitalise the local economy?
