Does anyone know why Shanks said this?

I have not been short of invitations to other clubs and have been received more warmly by Everton than I have by Liverpool. It's probably fair to say that they are now 'my' team.

    * Ater his retirement.
Seen it quoted on a bitter site first, couldn't believe the crap they talk about.(while doin some reading on Adam Pepper)
Was particularly shocked at that quote though.
I know Shankly hung around a good bit after he stepped down as manager and all, but what made him say this?
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

    * After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

after he retired bill used to keep coming down to melwood
    he couldnt let go
after a while they had to ask him not to come down any more as all the players still called him boss

Was Paisley the manager at the time? I always thought Shanks hung around for a good few years after.

Yup. He was making it uncomfortable for Paisley who was finding it difficult with all players calling shanks the boss.

Paisley was Boss but couldnt manage the players because Shanks couldnt let go. He would be at the training ground routinely and this undermined Paisley.

So sadly they had to tell Shanks to stay away

Sad ending as he just couldnt let go

                Cheers for the replies lads.
I thin I remember reading something about this before now, but.
I will say, I bet shanks was hanging around for a while after, it didn't seem to effect us that much in the end if we went through the most successfull period in Liverpool history, and Shanks must have been hanging around for a bit of it. Sad to see it ending that way. Hate to see bitters throwing that in our faces aswell.
Anyway, atleast shanks put them down more than once in more ways that one

I think he said that because whilst he hadn't been short on invitations to various clubs, it was Everton that made him most welcome - even more so than Liverpool. That's possibly why he switched allegiances. Obviously this all happened after his retirment.

I remember an interview with someone (forget who), but they basically said that after shanks left he spent more time at bellefield than he did at Melwood, which basically is the same as most that's been said here

In Bill Shanklys biography I think Stephen Kelly wrote it? I would say that he probably did say that, as he was keeping fit by running round Everton's training ground and was warmly recepted by the bitters on match days.
I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

Are you watching Manchester United? Are you watching Chelsea? This is Liverpool F.C taking over the bloody world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shanks was a football man he'd watch a kick about on the park and as many on here have said he couldnt let go

Did you know that when Tommy Docherty was managing Man U he asked Shankly to help him out (by giving advice)

Docherty said shortly after this he walked into the dressing at Old Trafford to find Shankly giving a team talk to his players!!!!

Never thought I would read that either. But as you and others have said, football was in his viens, probably just couldn't help himself.
