Injuries to Torres & Alonso - Who's to blame

Perhaps the most deflating aspect of sunday's match was the re-occurance of their respective injuries.

For 2 players to suffer the very same injuries they have been out with prior to the match is very poor management.

Torres was quite clearly nowhere fit whilst Alonso's injury obviously wasn't fully healed either.

But who, if anyone is to blame for this. Is it the medical staff, the players themselves or Rafa.

I think in Torres' case, the player must take most of the blame. He must have known he was nowhere fit. If the decision to play was left to the player then Torres has done both himself and LFC no favours. Even if encouraged to play by Rafa he should have said that if he did play he would not be able to himself or the team justice.

Alonso is a harder one to call. Presumably the medical staff must have felt he would be ok, so to the player as he was even included for the Besiktas match.

However, the real reason we had to play both Alonso & Torres is that the game was so important for us. I think Rafa knew a defeat would virtually rule us out of the title race for another season. I think he decided to take a risk, in playing key players, knowing they weren't fit but hoped we'd get away with it.

However, we didn't, and whilst the draw we achieved kept us in the title hunt, will the price of the injuries mean our challenge will falter elsewhere. Without torres in particular, we don't look like scoring enough goals to keep us in touch with Arsenal & Utd.

Thought Torres had a different injury??

      No-one.

The Torres injury is a new tear that happened not a re-occurence of the tear that he got when playing for Spain.

Alonso had been training the fracture had healed yet he's broken it again it's just back luck IMO.

Don't know what you're getting at, it seems a matter of being screwed if we did play them and screwed if we didn't.

I don't see the point of pinning blame here.

Torres got a tear to another abductor, not the same one. Of course, usually when you carry an injury, the muscles around the injured one compensate and can thus come under too much strain.

Xabi was cleared for Besiktas too. I guess he landed awkwardly on the foot he had already been injured in. Bad luck or bad management? Tough call.

            .

Have to say I agree mate, especially with this bit. It was clear from Torres' first touch of the ball and his first "sprint" that he was nowhere near fit. He must've known??

I think you answered your own questions there.

he must have known yes, but it is a good sign of how much he wants to play for the club....

maybe a bit of immaturity and stubbornness on torres behalf to play.

however i fail to believe with the resources available at a big club like ours that the medical staff would **** about with a 20m pound investment and declare him fit when he clearly wasnt ????

this is where medical expertise comes in imo

if a player is not fit - tell benitez he is not ready and add to it the risks of playing him too soon
