Assuming tomas' post taken from the Norwegian source is accurate this could be some sort of game of chess Rafa is playing trying to drive Mascher's price down. The player himself has declared how desperate he is to stay at the club and Rafa could be using this as a bargaining chip to force the valuation down.

I'm also sure Rafa would pay the £17m price tag if that is what is required to secure him permanently. The guy is young and world class, and if we ever did want rid surely the sell-on fee would be higher than £17m?

Rafa is trying to bring down his price. There is no surprise Masch has recently come out with these statements. It is in order to force Kia to accept a lower bid for him than the £17m or so in the clause.

Playing chess with a player who if made available could be the hottest transfer target in 2008 is a foolish game to play. Every top club will want Mascherano in their ranks. Why should Kia accept a lower valuation for a player he knows can fetch far more than 10 million?

I agree with you Dhavlos, Rafa will pay what it takes to sign Mascher on a permanent deal.

and I have no doubt we will get him for cheaper than 17mil. You would think we paid some up front too, for the loan fee.

Also, once we sell momo, riise and carson that will more than fund the masch.

Personally, I think the masc would be worth more than 17 across europe, so even if bought him at the price agreed of 17mil, I reckon we could sell him a season later for closer to 22mil, or use him as bait for a bigger fish anyway.

Mascherano should be signed asap and the owners should not mess around with this transfer any longer. With the sale of Carson, it should be a straightforward transaction and if you take into account the money available as a result of the collapse of the Heinze transfer, there's no excuse if this deal doesn't go through.

Sorry my bad I thought for a second there you were saying one of our most consistent players for years, a guy who would run through a brick wall for the badge, sound as a pound, barely puts a foot wrong, plays through several pain barriers, was suddenly not world class anymore because he has a few be par performances. Was waiting for the yeah but would he make it into United comments of old ... but I obviously got the wrong end of the stick .. apologies
