So Arsenal fail to win at Newcastle.
Every week is must-win and this weekend is no different. We're now 7 points off the top but, assuming we win our (home) game in hand, we're 2nd - with the best goal difference.
This weekend Chelsea & Man United have home bankers against Sunderland and Derby respectively - emphasising the importance of winning at Reading. Arsenal travel to Boro, which is almost as safe a bet as our other two rivals.
The following weekend, of course, is what Sky Sports have yet again labelled 'Grand Slam Sunday'.
Having failed to beat both Chelsea & Arsenal at home, it's arguably more imperative than usual that we take 3 points off United, while Arsenal & Chelsea cut each other's throats.
By the end of play next Sunday, we could (and should) be a clear 2nd in the table - and a worst-case scenario of being 7 points behind Arsenal with a game in hand.
The final group of games before Christmas is very interesting.
Liverpool v Portsmouth
Blackburn v Chelsea
Blue****e v Scum
Arsenal v Spurs
By which time, we ought to be breathing right down Arsenal's necks.
Boxing Day sees us travel to Derby, while Arsenal are at Fratton Park.
This is basically a long-winded, stoned 'thinking aloud' ramble about the next few weeks and where we could be. We have every chance of going into the New Year top of the table or thereabouts, despite being written off left, right and centre.
The longer the public and the mass media focus on the other three, the better for us. We're sneaking up on the rails, almost unnoticed. The Reds are coming up the hill, boys!
